Looks like Porge was able to fix the forum :good:

Another nice day. Did have a bit of a deja vu moment a couple of days ago when I thought I would do a small repair inside the engine compartment.  Then noticed the C channel thingo (does it hold some sort of seal?) was non-existant.  Luckily the side panel wasn’t too bad.  Then turned my head and the dreaded tin worm had attacked the rear overhead back section (sorry I don’t know the names!!)  Also, part on the support for the rear deck area was gone.  Anyhow, slow and steady wins the race.  I would say, if I were to do this again, I would invest in a 1200mm folder, and a guillo.  I have a small 300mm folder, but cutting everything with a grinder or shears sucks.  Also turned him into a 60, with the quad taillights :)

What a  score!!  Started out trying to find a wrecked rear hatch I could make cuts from to try and fix the hatch I had.  Which led me to Ian the Kombi whizz (not our IJ the AWD whizz!!), who had a mint one for my model for a decent price (by kombi standards)  Mine was only fitted in 1960/61.  Prior they were different, and after went to a much larger window.  So to find one mint, and the correct year is a mini lotto win.  Also now I have everything pretty much done around the back hatch, so ticking off the big-ticket items.  Fun times!!

Thought I would share these, this is my Dad and his mate’s back in the day.  428-322 was Dads home built Austin 7 special.  Apparently he modded it copying an early Colin Chapman version.  For those in S.A., that’s the foreshore of Victor Harbor going across to granite island.

Well, that’s the rear hatch area done and dusted.  Big relief.  The last really major bit, tbh was dreading it a bit.  Turned out to be complicated but not hard if that makes sense.  Put the stretcher to work and started making up my internal channel replacements.  very happy with the progress so far.  And, of course, the main thing is the customer is happy  :good:

Never stop learning hey.  Its also nice sometimes to stop and look back and see how much you have done, you sort of can forget sometimes the progress you have made, all you see is all that’s in front of you :good:

A great day today, but spent a lot of it with IJ’s comment about how long jobs can take ringing in my head

But felt great not having to rush like on a weekend.  Feel like I got a lot done.  The “assembly” across the top above the rear hatch is a pretty complicated little bit of kit, especially if yours is non-existent so not really anything to go on.  But I am happy with how it’s turning out, ready for welding in tomorrow hopefully.

It is just crazy how much time some jobs can take.  I had to ake up a simple 900 long nut plate today for the rear hatch hinge, 3 hours later…  Coming along a treat though mate, really looking the goods.

Have just started 3 weeks holidays so hoping to give the project a bit of a kick along. One thing I am really thankful for is that the VW crew in SA seen super helpful.  And having Cooper literally up the road from me, and so free to offer advice or share his knowledge is bloody awesome.  He invited me to his workshop today and we (he, ha ha) made up the strengthening pieces that goes across the top inside the channel.  Also folded up some repair pieces.

Yesterday I knocked up the nut plate and some repair pieces for the “columns”.  I do really enjoy how I can start off with a small piece of flat sheet and fiddle away and come up with some tricky little shapes, very cool.  So been playing around and have the new rear piece let in, it’s not welded yet.  So tomorrows aim is to build up the assembly.  Make up some retainers for the nut plate, get that in, and the strengthener etc, then see how far I get, I may even get it in.

Also done a big order with Creative Engineering, for all the polished windows, front safaris, rear safari, side pop-outs, and also two side safaris.  And also have the rack and pinion steering conversion coming over too.

Thanks mate, yep, totally.  If you can even the smallest hole, brace yourself…  These were only built to last 10 years, and they were never intended to be anything more than a utility type work vehicle.  It’s a long slog, no doubt, but I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel :good:

I think I am on the home straight of the “big stuff”.  The two horizontal side cross pieces had really bad rust, it’s weird how they get it some places, then only a few inches away it will be perfect.  So got them removed, also rust treated it.  Going to have a go at filling the body pinholes with weld rather than patch it all.  See how that goes.

Then the remaining bad area is above the rear hatch.  It’s basically non-existant.  Cooper came over and had a look for me.  It’s hard when an area is totally rusted away to work out how it goes when you haven’t seen one before.  He has offered during my break, to come down to his shop and we are going to fold up the replacement panels.

Slow and steady wins the race.
