No he isn’t ha ha. Good thread I reckon play on.
Btw I only started the forum as I didnt see a forum for Commodores that was build/enthusiast focused like Street Commodores used to be. So that was my path.

Posts: 5 777So spare wheel well reduced to make space for the Varex. Actually I think turned out pretty neat. So the million dollar question is, is it quiter? answer heaps,. But I don’t have any rear wheels at the moment as I am getting them re powder coated (thanks Bob Jane for chipping them) So its stuck in the shed hard against the wall. Anyhow, hopefully next week end with my mate will take it to a park or something with a db meter he has loaned me and see how much its attenuated it. For now I have wired it with the switch in a little box so the idea is I will for now just bring it through the rear seats up so can operate it whilst driving it to test it all out. Then once its all sorted will permanently mount the switch in the boot.
Few random pics for posterity….

Posts: 5 777Thanks buddy, very interesting. I actually since I did the system above did a lot of work, and cut down the spare wheel well and fitted a Varex rear muffler. I got it close but not close enough. But I also think now that the tune wasn’t helping. Might see if I can post the mods i did.

Posts: 5 777Yep, I use photobucket. Actually I have found it pretty easy to open up an old post, just copy and paste. Only thing it doesn’t seem to pick up on is stuff like bold, underlining. or emoticons but we are working on that.

Posts: 5 777If anyone has a set up like mine, so that’s a drivers side radiator top entry then there is a radiator hose you can buy off the shelf that will work. It fits a Cadillac Escalade, as well as a 2500 pick up. The Gates part number is 22358, you just trim the bit you don’t need and are left with the perfect Z section. Here’s a couple of pics.
For the bottom hose, if you use an Aeroflow swivel thermostat housing, you can orientate it straight down so you can use an off the shelf 90 degree bend.

Posts: 5 777Got invited up last week to see a guy who is a bit of a guru in the Kombi scene. He has an awesome set up. Coincidentally he is doing a Kombi at the moment that came off the line only 50 numbers different, so probably close to the same week in early 1960. He is doing a beautiful job, adn spent a hor or so with me taking through whats needed.

Posts: 5 777Well, seems not all Splitty’s are not the same… There are quite a few subtle and not so subtle differences I am learning.
There are a couple of different versions of the front door, the only change is an extra recess in post ’61 busses, compare to pre ’61 like mine. You can see below the difference, looks like the door i picked up a few months back is not period correct.
Also on the side cargo doors there is again two versions, mine has the top hinge up high, whereas the later ones moved it down.
So as bad luck would have it, I found a guy who has the parts I need, and yep you guessed it they are not correct. Bummer, so the search continues.

Posts: 5 777This is us picking it up. Was a shit of a day, rainy as but hey I really wanted to get it home Really happy getting a chance to get a really close look at it, I know it looks bad but for 53 years old, she is looking pretty sound. whats there is still rock solid, obviously the front is toast but they are available as a complete unit nowadays. Tomorrow will get it into the container, then sit on it for a while. Woo hoo, we own a Splitty!!

Posts: 5 777ThnKs guys, been so much fun building it. And now really feel like I am close to truly being able to enjoy it. I think once the glide is in, and the old exhaust is back on etc, game on, time for some fun.
Maybe even a Commodores Plus SA cruise.
