I’ve just read through all 43 pages of this thread – this is one impressive build up and the result speaks for itself. Good to see someone tackling a lot of the work themselves too – the satisfaction of the end result makes it all worth it. I’m keen to see some more pictures of this radiator setup, maybe a link to purchase it too and some part numbers for the hoses… asking for a friend…
P.S. I plan to run braided hose for my T400 trans cooler lines too – as long as I can keep them away from heat.
September 25, 2015 at 11:14 pm #9626Said it before mate, just a beautiful cruiser. I think a reasonably low profile reverse cowl would finish it off nicely. If you can score a separate bonnet so you swap back and forth even better.
Cheers mate it means a lot to hear positive comments after all the hard work that has gone into it. Already have a spare bonnet I scored from a wrecker a while ago so all that’s left is buying a lower profile filter and the cowl and finding the time to do it all. Swapping back and forth is exactly what I am looking for.
must’ve misted you at cruise for charity, swear i walked round ,saw and took photos of all the old girls in the car park at joondalup before it started
Yeah I wasn’t at Joondalup for all that long. Went to a pre-meet at KPP in Landsdale first and by the time we cruised up to ECU the line was long so it was stop start all the way in. Main car park ended up being full so had to go park in the overflow and I could already feel that the car wasn’t happy with the stop start (fouled plugs). Everyone at that stage was starting to leave so I paid my donation and pretty much left after a quick walk around. Cruised down the coast but pulled the pin before getting on the freeway and limped it home. Chucking a new fuel pump on tomorrow because I have been sus of the one I used ever since I built the motor and working with the primary jetting to try get the rich condition sorted. All things going to plan I will be at the last C&C for the year this Sunday. Set to be a big one so super keen for it.
September 22, 2015 at 6:12 pm #9409Love this car have followed the build on SC and now on this forum
Thanks a lot man! It has been an absolute blast cruising it and getting to know it again. Got down to the first leg of Cruise for Charity over the weekend but pulled the plug early into the cruise down to the Motorplex due to tune related issues and limped it home. Been chasing down the perfect tune in preparation for Powercruise in a few weeks and have almost sorted it. Also thinking of doing a steel reverse cowl molded to my spare bonnet so I can fly under the radar a bit more on the street. Got a million and one little things to do but it’s all about finding the time… Although I try bring it out for every weekend and event that I can. Hopefully will be at the last Cars and Coffee for the year this Sunday coming, all depending on if I can sort the few issues I am having.
August 17, 2015 at 7:06 pm #8493Cheers man!
Another photo. From yesterday’s Cars and Coffee. Love cruising this thing.
August 13, 2015 at 10:14 pm #8443Cheers guys, ordered some shortened Monroes. Will have to throw up a recent photo now that it’s back on the road. Here is one from the C&C on the 26th. Will put a better one up tomorrow.
August 10, 2015 at 6:51 pm #8322Alright so after a Sunday morning cruise yesterday, pulling into the shed and the front left shock dumped all its oil. Think it’s about time I buy a new pair of front shocks considering they are still the originals and I am running King SSL springs now. Obviously I will need to go for a short shock. What’s everyone going for these days in terms of brand? Monroe/KYB/Other???
April 20, 2015 at 9:48 pm #5171Definitely the way to go if you want to learn a whole bunch along the way. Trust me after you are done you will be able to take the car apart and put it together with your eyes closed. Very keen to follow this build!
April 20, 2015 at 6:48 pm #5151I’ll keep an eye for it !
Come introduce yourself if I’m hanging around the car. Always happy to meet fellow enthusiasts.
Ok that sounds great, remember to keep us posted about the cruise. With the rear end, the 3.55:1 must be pretty lively compared to my 2.78:1. How do you think you will be going about taking it back to bare metal ? That’s probably 1st thing on my to do list. Again let me say it’s great to see how far you’ve come with this car and I hope you enjoy it for a long time to come.
Will do Yeah the 3.55:1 certainly got up and went, even for a stock tired 173 and 4 speed ha ha. Actually a good cruising ratio as it’s a good compromise. When the time comes to go back to bare metal, I will be taking the car to Greg at Stripped Bare in Naval base. You will pay a bit more than doing it yourself but the end result is a completely stripped base to start with and when you know what you’re working with right from the beginning of the process, body work becomes much easier. Cheers for the kind words, it’s been a long process but seeing it inspiring other people is definitely awesome to know.
April 20, 2015 at 6:33 pm #5144Thanks fellas. Justin mate I will probably hit you up sometime, about something!! Sounds like the engine machining shop in Midland did a top job? My 253 will be coming out eventually and it would be nice to rest assured it’s in reputable hands… ANYWAY, that’s not in the picture for a while.
Feel free to Yeah mate, from memory no issues. I know of a few places though for when the time comes that will look after your engine. Are you going to do the build yourself or outsource?
April 20, 2015 at 9:16 am #5104Welcome aboard mate. Glad that I could provide some inspiration. Feel free to ask for any advice! There are so many little things on these cars that is useful to know when you’re going through a build.
April 20, 2015 at 9:14 am #5102Mint GTS mate. Always loved this shape and colour, tough and still classy. VE GTS wheels look good but can’t go past the original wheels and low on these, Holden definitely got that right from the factory.
April 20, 2015 at 9:06 am #5101Hey mate, just read through WHOLE build and great detail in the posts/pics! Sounds killah too. Going to keep watching thread, sorry if you said it already but is there much more to come in terms of future plans? Done an awesome job so far and hopefully see you cruising in Perth sometime!! Cheers
Cheers man. I have been thinking for a while that it would be good to get some first gens together in Perth for a cruise. May look at setting something up in the not too far future! Definitely got a lot more in store. I am thinking next thing I want to sort out is a good rear end setup. Haven’t gone through the finer details but I am thinking along the lines of mini tubs (to the rail)/shortened diff to suit/etc. After that I want to take it back to bare metal and do the panel and paint, fix the tiny amount of rust it has and get it looking mint. I will also swap the motor out eventually, maybe at the same point that I do the body work, as I have already started gathering parts for a 355 build. For now though, I am just happy to enjoy it, you may see the rear end setup by the end of this year though, not sure yet. These things are never finished :D
April 19, 2015 at 10:49 pm #5086Never used this but have been told this is pretty good stuff.
I painted my flexible t-bar slide. Comes up like new. Not much can be done about gear indicator and it’s hard to find good ones
there’s a few clear plastic restoration products you can buy that might sort out the yellowing and fine scratches from the gear indicator Something like this ? http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotive/products/g12310-plastx-clear-plastic-cleaner-polish/
2000wet and polish. If that doesn’t work, not much can be done :(
Cheers for all the advice guys. If the lead on the selector indicator doesn’t come through I will be sure to try out all of the above and hopefully get something presentable. The selector window insert is actually presentable (photo makes it look bad) it’s just broken at the bottom and when in park you can see the shifter mechanism below. I will have to try glue it back together and hope that works.
Anyway, what’s happening with the car: Well I only got a bit of time to do stuff today but there really isn’t that much left anyway. Stripped down the front bumper today and will straighten that up on Tuesday plus sand blast/paint the brackets etc and take it to get rechromed by midweek. Still need to sort out the PCV/Catch can situation, just waiting for it to be delivered. Only other thing is to cut a hole in the bonnet and get that back on. Will then give it a good detail and take it for a test drive. I am thinking the converter may have to come out before I get too far to make way for a histall but am holding off on that until I go for a test drive. Hoping to make the Cars and Coffee on the 24th of May… Fingers crossed…
April 19, 2015 at 9:45 am #5042Just had a quick flick through your SC thread. Great work !!
Cheers man. It’s been a long road but I’m literally 2 or so weeks away from the first drive with the new combo.
I’m running a vk low rise console and I looks the same to me re those parts.. Have you tried comparing vk to vc parts? Vks seem to get more parts support than our yellow vc toys!
Legend! Was able to find the selector indicator but no luck on the selector (window?). May repair mine and leave it be. Nothing some super glue can’t fix lol.
April 18, 2015 at 6:37 pm #5019April 1, 2015 at 12:38 am #3725Great work so far mate. The HQ shape is among the best. Convos look tough too. I have plans for a ‘Q to sit next to the VB one day with a spare big block I have sitting around. Will definitely follow this build.
April 1, 2015 at 12:29 am #3724Thanks HSV865. I’m a bit hesitant about banging on about it on forums, people are probably sick of hearing about the car. It has a Holden roller block stroked to 396ci. Grouted, o-ringed, CNC -9 Yella Terra heads, TP Pro Paw intake, E85, Holley Ultra XP 850dp. It actually hasn’t seen the 1/4 with the TP manifold. Tubbed and 4 point removable cage. T400 trans. 9″ diff. Best 1/4 at the moment, 10.7 @ 126mph. Have had a constant miss over 5500rpm, so will be testing a different ignition system. Engine comes out this week. Going a bigger cam and higher comp. Will be up around 13:1. So not sure what it’ll run after that. Hopefully a bit quicker with the ignition system I’ll be testing, but probably not a great deal quicker I don’t think until it gets NOS.
This NEEDS a dedicated build thread. I think I am in love just reading that.
March 8, 2015 at 8:25 pm #2261What’s the go for early girls when you don’t want to go 9 inch? Have heard the VL Turbo diffs are the ones people usually choose. What kind of power do they hold up to?
March 8, 2015 at 8:21 pm #2259Sweet VH mate. Looks super clean. Would be keen to read about the brake upgrade when you do it. Was something I was thinking would be happening to mine before too long.
March 8, 2015 at 8:17 pm #2257Like I’ve said before on sc, great car and great work! Feel free to do my bay next haha.
Ha ha ha so much work to do it! And this was only a stock respray… no smoothing or cutting anything. Learnt a whole lot for next time though.
Finished welding the exhaust over the weekend including the H pipe and got it on the car just to start it and see how it sounds… Sounds awesome… throaty, deep and aggressive, no sign of thong slapping lol. Just have to sandblast and paint it now and that will be it for the exhaust. May make a start on dropping the front suspension out for springs/brake work tomorrow.
