Get front and rear bush kit from AutoOne. I used all whiteline gear and done it all my self. It’s very simple to do mate. Front and rear cost me $510 inc new sway bars etc Can after engineering like said. But don’t just get the biggest angriest one.

theres a similar kit on eBay from super pro that includes strut tops that I need as well. How hard is it to get the bushes out? I thought you need a press to get the new ones in

If you are engineering this btw, you don’t want to have to pass an emissions test, valve overlap on the cam will kill you. Stock cam first, so it gets approved without the test, get it passed, then cut loose with mods?

thats the plan. It’ll basically be a stock LS3 plus intake, tune and exhaust, get it engineered and rego sorted and put some kms on it to get it all right.

In regards to the cam. Bigger isn’t always best mate.

I’ll keep that in mind when I’m ready to go, that part is a long way away at the moment haha.

Got a quote for a new VK radiator, VS booster, VT master cylinder, VT discs, calipers, pads, lines etc. for just under a grand.

I also called my local suspension place, a Pedders outlet, and they quoted $345 to supply and fit new bushes to the k frame and lower control arms. Not rubber ones, there was another type he mentioned, like Nolathane. It’ll definitely need it, but not sure what that cost is like, or whether I should buy the kit off eBay and find a mechanic with a press to swap them out

I’ll be selling the power steering pump and air con compressor off the motor if anyone is after one or the other.

Maybe just go the cheapest route, its no big deal if after its all built its not quite up to the task and you need to save up and swap the radiator over, its not like you are modifying anything to fit. What I mean is its not like it won’t work at all, worse case on hot days, during burnouts or whatever the temp creeps up.

That’s an idea. I’ll do some hunting around to see if i can get a second hand one, if not I’ll get a new one. If it doesnt work, I’m sure I’d be able to sell it.

On a side note, the motor has arrived :yahoo:

Spoke to Paul at Paul Rogers to order the box and converter. He’s sending me a spec sheet for the converter so they can make it to suit my application. Gonna go for a fairly large cam, something like a Turbo Killer from GMM  or a VCM 13, up around the 23x 24x range so it’s nice and grumpy and goes like a scalded cat

Stuck on what radiator to run. CAE can do one for $1k with thermos all ready to go, but it’s an aussie desert coolers one and there’s a lot of negative reviews around for them. I spoke to South Coast Radiators and they quoted $1500 for a sheet metal unit with thermos , or $1300 for a street version. I also spoke to a workshop thats done a couple of LS into VK conversions and they run the standard VK 308 radiator without any issues. Going that route will save some coin, so it’s difficult to decide.

Can also get a brand new VK V8 radiator for $422, AU thermos for an extra $150 new.

Man you are moving along with this at a rate of knots, nice work. I would highly recommend getting stuff like k frame etc powder coated satin black. Tough as old boots and keeps looking mint.

was thinking about doing that. I think it needs new bushes, so I might pull the front end apart, get the bushes removed, powdercoat it all and put the new bushes in

What’s it like to drive on the street with the converter? I’ve gotta order a converter and need to figure out what stall speed to get.

Its killer on the street man. Nice and loose. Easy to maintain speed etc

What made you go with the 5800 stall? Is it suited to your cam?

Also grabbed the paint for the bay. That’s gonna be fun lol. Not much left in the bay to strip out, gonna try and get it ready for paint over the Easter long weekend.

Picked up the k frame and rack yesterday. Gotta clean the k frame cause it’s filthy. Also need to get new tie rod ends for the rack. Had a poke around the car today and noticed it needs new strut tops. Should I get a front end bush kit for it? There’s a Superpro front end rebuild kit on eBay for $510 that include strut tops and tie rod ends.

Was thinking about a VT brake upgrade. From what I’ve seen, I need a VS booster, VT master cylinder, calipers, discs, hub adapters, and lines. Anything else? I should be able to get it all from a wrecker

Had another thought while driving home. I originally wanted to do a blue meany replica, but looking at it now, I reckon I could do a white replica for a pretty cheap price. Most of the car is already white, I’ve got a group a front bar and grill already so I just need the rear wing, and only have to paint over the silver on the bottom of the doors. Give the whole car a buff, clear coat and sticker kit and it’s done

No engineering in that, exhaust, tail shaft, custom loom?

Engineering will be about $800 but I haven’t included that yet, got lots to do before I even get close so that will come later, dunno about tail shaft or diff yet, loom is included in the CAE stuff. They supply a brand new harness that matches my existing one and extends it so I can mount the ECU in the cabin, plus add wiring to connect it to the factory VK harness so the dash all works as normal. I send my harness to them so they can make sure they have all the connectors, and send the new loom back along with my old one.

I knew my budget wouldnt cover everything seeing as I went with an LS3 and built TH400. I could of went for an LS1 or L98 and got everything done, but I wanted to splash out on the big ticket stuff while I can, and do the smaller stuff as time goes by. Haven’t really touched it for nearly three years so another couple of months wont hurt, hahaha

Picking up a VR fuel tank tomorrow. The CAE stuff comes with an in tank fuel pump that has in internal regulator so I can run a line from the tank to the rail and wont need the external regulator ($150 saving, yay). They said it’ll support 5-600hp so it should be plenty for me. Starting to lean towards the CAE stuff I mentioned earlier, spoke to CRS and they said it’s $2465 for their conversion kit, plus around $1800 for the loom mods.

Possible budget update could be this:

    • Engine – $8200
    • Gearbox, converter and trans cooler – $5000
    • CAE conversion gear – $5200
    • VL rack, VR V8 k-frame and fuel tank – $675

Total is $19,075, leaving just under a grand. Still need to get a radiator with thermos, fuel line, brakes, sump, and probably more stuff I’ve forgotten.

Please excuse the rambling posts, it helps me keep my ideas in one place and get suggestions from the rest of you guys haha  :good:

Decided to give the bay a coat of paint. Can get a litre of hi fill primer for $63, 500ml of white paint for $50, both with hardener. A mate can get the spray gun, thinners etc. so I should get out of it for under $200. Fun times ahead…..

I’ve read good and bad things about both, at the moment the CAE stuff looks appealing as they were great to speak to, answered my multitude of questions they’ve probably heard a million times before, and the gear all works together. I’ll be calling CRS this morning to see what info I get from them, might also call Lowe Fab as well.

Spoke to my engineer yesterday, he said it’ll cost about $800 for a certificate. Didnt think that was too bad really. Also wasn’t too concerned about what parts to use as long as it works together as a unit, so basically with the LS3 I just need to make sure the box, tail shaft, diff and brakes are up to it.

What a weapon. Seeing your work on the bay has me wanting to do mine before I stick the motor in.

At the moment the bay is black. Was thinking I’d clean it out and give it a quick tidy up, remove the battery tray, primer and some white paint while its empty.

I’ve been reading Bdl_007’s thread about his VL with the LS2 and reading about him giving his bay a tidy up has got me thinking about mine

Yeah that’s what I’ve been doing. Does the list of parts include everything I need or are there some items I don’t?

also thinking about splashing some paint over the bay so it looks like it matches the rest of the car. Not a full soothed out bay, just a quick tidy and some white paint. Shouldn’t take too much to do
