Posts: 585Ah ok. A mate who’s helping me put the motor and box in and do the wiring has a detailing business and he’s looking after that part once I’ve done the prep work.
Definitely aiming for that glass like finish though

Posts: 585Looks good mate, glad you had a crack. As you say spend the time rubbing it back between coats and at the end it will come up nice. Do you have a da ?

Posts: 585Thanks lads. Turned out better than I thought, there were a couple of runs after the first coat and my mate who was spraying was spewing, but each coat after the first went on better and better and the runs blended it, once it was done it looked great. A bit of time with some wet & dry and it should flatten out nicely. Got heaps of paint left and my mate wants to give it a couple more coats to get it built up so there’s plenty of thickness to sand and buff without worrying about going through.
Nice budget job, only cost me $500 so far!

Paint finally on:

Today after it dried overnight:
Overall I’m happy with how it turned out considering it was a home job in the garage and it was only about 18-19 degrees while spraying. There is a bit of peel over the whole car which should be easily smoothed out with some wet & dry before the next couple of coats to get it mickey mouse.

Posts: 585Had a big couple of days. Spent Friday night and all day Saturday masking and sanding, got to spray today finally. Got 3 full coats done (except bonnet, boot and front guards) plus a fourth coat over the doors to cover the silver. Came out great, a couple of small runs and a little bit of peel which was expected. Going to let it sit for two or three weeks, wet sand it so it’s nice and smooth, and hit it with a couple more coats. Once that cures, more wet sanding to get it silky smooth and buff and polish. In between will be the front end, getting the bonnet finished with the cowl and painting the bonnet, guards and boot. Pics will be put up soon, currently resting the legs and having a few cans

Posts: 585Still gonna get it done. It’s the only time my mate is free for three days in a row to get stuck into it. Got some heat lamps to put up and full body suits and masks, as well as plenty of beer

Posts: 585On a side note, what type of intake are you using? I’m putting and LS3 into a VK and need to sort out the intake for engineering as it needs to be enclosed.

Posts: 585It shouldnt really matter if it runs the maf or if it is mafless, the newer LS motor mafs arent as restrictive as the old LS1 was. Definitely all in the tune, either speak to the original tuner and explain what is happening or go to a new tuner. There are heaps of threads in online forums of people who are unhappy after the get a cam fitted because of similar reasons you’ve mentioned, and a retune has sorted it out and totally transformed the car. Take Gary’s VR LSX for example, he had a shocking tune earlier in his build when the tuner mainly tuned for WOT and after taking it elsewhere it’s not a completely different animal.

Posts: 585Valve springs should of been changed when the cam was done. I’d suggest getting the tune looked at, get the tuner to spend some time tuning across the whole rev range, not just up top. Cam specs sound like a mid sized cam and should go pretty good in a L98, but it’s all in the tune.
Diff gears might also help get it off the line a bit quicker to get the revs up into the sweet spot.

Posts: 585Cheers mate, I was deadset blown away, so was my mate who sprayed it.
All set to spray it this weekend. Didn’t get the cowl mounted, only had a few hours on it but managed to get the bonnet sanded back and the majority of the rust spots removed.
will be pulling the front and rear windscreens out and taking the boot lid off Friday night and getting started on rubbing the body back and masking.

Posts: 585Car will be painted over the long weekend next week. Going to try and get the cowl mounted this weekend, bogged and primed. Going to do inside the door jams, but not going to pull the doors off.

Posts: 585Should I pop the front and rear windows out before paint? How hard are they to get out, and do I need to get a windscreen dude to put them back in? Or can I just pop the rubbers out from around the edge?

Posts: 585What the paint shop said is true, clear over base will give a slightly better finish if sprayed right but just straight colour still comes up good. Doors on or off doesn’t really matter that much, what ever suits you better. Can get a difference in the finish from the quarter panel to the doors if they are laid flat. After painting depends if the car gets baked or not, and something which would depend on what brand of paint you use. Usually fully cured after a couple of weeks but can be washed/ detailed in the next day. Rear wing would probably be better painted off
Thanks mate. It’ll be sprayed in my garage, the bay was done there and it’s turned out pretty good. At the moment I’m thinking about going with the solid colour, the bay’s done in that and I’m happy with the finish, there’s bugger all peel in it as well.
will also need remove and re-glue the front bar group a extension as it’s coming apart.
