Pretty sure that’s what they quoted me on, they said there’s cheap and nasty ones around

I know the spicer ones are about $550-600 off eBay so $700 fitted seemed ok to me

also cava seen one of your posts on another forum somewhere, what involved in fitting a M80 into a VT series 1 5LT? mate of mine has his VT that is starting to whine, he would like a ratio change but not sure if he gets his original LSD rebuilt (not sure what gearsets fit), or just upgrade to the m80 type?

    maybe?….depends on price…was leaning towards  3.7’s though

boss quoted be about $700 to supply a new gearset, including install which i thought was pretty good.

So I’m on the right track……

It’s going to cost the same for a new gear set, so might go for the 3.7’s

Im a bit worried that if I went with 3.46 it might not be quite enough

Also what ratio diff gears would you suggest?

i was looking at either at 3.46 or 3.73, I don’t do much highway driving but my VS has 3.9’s and they make the engine rev a bit on the highway, which can irritating after a bit

i have a LSD that I removed from the same VX SS as the LS1, but it’s only 3.07 so want to put something in it, and just get it freshened up.

the engine is out an 2002 VX so from what ive found it should already be the LS6 manifold

might give it a miss for the time being, and if i decide to do something i’ll  just get the 241’s worked on

Picked up a few more bits in the last few weeks

out of curiosity are 243 cast heads a worthy upgrade over 241 heads.

My original Plans is to keep the 241 heads, and keep them stock, to keep the overall cost down. Im keeping the compression stock, and running the Standard 2002 LS1 manifold.

I have found a few sets of the 243’s for sale lately, just am unsure if id be wasting time and money on a set? ive read up on alot of US Forums and they all seem to say there better flow etc. also what would i expect to pay for a second hand set?

thanks for that renno, had a look at the wiring between the V6 and V8 Models, and there pretty much wired the same between the VY and VZ, both models have a the 4 pin plug for the V6’s, and the V8’s both have 5 pin plugs. just looks like the V8’s have and extra wire which is spliced off one of the existing fan wires further back in the loom, so should be pretty simple, but i’ll check the thickness of the wiring size used when i get nearer to fitting them, i kept the full VX SS Sedan Body harness just incase so i can make something work.

picked up a set of V8 VZ SS thermo fans today, also bought a Alloy OTR which i think is a VCM for $200

also after a couple of phone calls, i finally got a quote back from Adam at Precision for the remaining LS1 Parts apart from pushrods, he told me which lifters and gasket sets i need, which were the main bits i wanted to know.

    ok thanks for that

looks like i have sourced a set out a VZ SS ute (with the larger motors) which i grab next week hopefully

as for Waterpumps i’ve used Genuine or GMB water pumps, but genuine ones are normally double or triple the price and both my VY V6 and VS V8 Have GMB ones currently fitted, I intend fitting a GMB one on the LS1 while its apart, the price i got the otherday was $159 excluding the thermostat from a local supplier, not sure if thats cheap or not but will check prices when im closer to needing it, its on my list of parts to buy

on ebay they do come up alot cheaper just not sure if there proper GMB as there around the $100 mark

Hope this picture helps mate should answer your questions

Not quite, they look like aftermarket ones, trying to work out genuine ones as most second hand units ive found are genuine

According to Holdens part numbers and info on my workshop manual, they said there are 2 version of each for sedan, wagon or ute excluding models i mentioned above, as they run larger fans again, one is an early production version 2004, the other was an late production version 2005-2006

Gutted ,was it dark if not just use that as an excuse

No wasn’t dark, but was leaning up against something, messaged the guy i bought it from within 20minutes of buying it, and asked him if it came out of the SS like it was suppose to as the side of it says V6, and no surprise i have had no replys, which makes me think the knew.

anyway listed it on gumtree now

photo will suffice at the moment, as far as i can tell the fan motors are smaller in size, and the small fan on the V6 type has the wiring running the opposite direction around the motor as the V8 setup

reason being is……..i picked up a set tonight off gumtree suppose to be off a VZ SS and i even questioned it while i was there as the fan motors looked like v6 ones ive seen but was told they were v8 ones.

Had a quick look over them, seemed ok, no broken mounting points etc, Grabbed them anyway, when i got home  pulled them out the boot and noticed the edge of them says VZ V6 down the side edge………….

just wondering if someone would happen to have a few photos of a VZ V8 thermo fan, tried googling it but getting mix results, just trying to check the diffrences between VZ V6 and V8, as the fans as very similar, they have the same shrouds, just different size motors

can be off a sedan, wagon or ute excluding Crewman, 1tonner or Adventra, as they run larger fans again

Well the Cam showed up from summit on Thursday, so that night i ordered the Valve Springs from Summit, ended up going with the Comp Cams set due to no one being 100% sure on which PAC ones to use as I kept getting told different part no’s.

I’ve also order the Rollmaster Vernier timing chain set which is coming from Victoria

+1 for Adam at Precision. He was here in SA when I was building mine and helped me out big time. He is a bloody walking encyclopedia on pretty much all the LS engines. Seriously what doesn’t know about them would fit in a coffee cup. There is a Precision warehouse/shop in SA at Brompton, and Bill Knight is there and is also a top guy. If they dont have it in stock they can generally get it over pretty quickly. They supply a lot of the big engine builders in town. If Adam is being tardy getting back to you he is probably busy quoting up my engine bits

last message i got Adam was a bit over 4 weeks ago, saying that he’d sort it out the following day, and that was after a week earlier of chasing him up……then i kind of gave up

i did contact Precision locally, i bought a few parts for the VS from there at Brompton. Turns out the guy who did quote the LS parts just gave me the pricing off there website, but did tell me, they dont have the Comp Cam in stock in Australia or even on order, he did give me a price on a Lunati voodoo cam very close to the specs, but it was still a bit over $700, outlaw was $700 for the exact Comp Cam

which is one of the reason’s i got it from the US for $515 with freight

there are still a fair bit of parts i need, main things being Valve springs, timing chain, Gaskets, lifters,  i’ll probably change the Water pump and Precision suggested id change the oil pump while its apart, and then the smaller bit and pieces, that are also required.

So i’ve been ordering a few parts as funds permit, ive already got a Comp Cams Trunion Upgrade Kit, Genuine GM Rear Main Cover and Seal, a Crane Cams Valve spring compressor and a few other various tools i think i will need, all from the US as they were a fair bit cheaper.

Also purchased a Powerbond 25% Underdrive Pulley kit, and a set of ARP Head Bolts locally, from Victoria.

ive just ordered the Comp Cams 219/227 Camshaft (part no 54-456-11) from Summit racing, that Cava suggested as it was almost $200 cheaper than Australia, and the 3 places i tried here in Australia couldn’t tell me either which valve springs to use or couldn’t supply the cam i wanted. i’ll work valve springs out soon, once the cam gets here.

Probably going to order some more stuff tonight,

at this stage im going to order the Comp Cams Double Valve springs, looking at either 26926TS-KIT (Tool Steel Retainers) or 26926TI-KIT (Titanium Retainers)

ive found them for $676 with freight, from Vic, cheapest ive found elsewhere is $780-$900

Does it matter which type of retainers i should get? as there the same price

    Cava

i kept trying to call Adam, i got a message back after a few days saying that he will quote it up the next day, but im still waiting on it and that was 2 weeks ago….so ive given up trying to get it through him

i have priced up a majority of the parts, both at my local speed shop and local branch at Precision, but ebay is still the better buy on most of it

Ive ordered the Comp cam Trunnion kit, there coming over from the US, paid $192 for it with the freight, which i thought was pretty good

Still Stuck on which PAC Valve spring to use, no one here is SA seems to keep them.

Precision dont have that Comp Cam in stock at all, the guy i was speaking to said they have a Lunati Voodoo Camshaft# 20540711 thats close to the same spec’s for $708, and the Lunati double valve springs to suit for $428

    CAM—– https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/lun-20540711

    Valve Springs —–https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/lun-73925k1

The Comp cam i can get through Summit Racing for $500-550, and matching comp cam springs for $680 (all up including freight)

    Precision also quoted me on:

Cloyes TGK346RCL Single Roller Z Timing Chain (9 Keyway) $250–he said this is alot better than the Rollermaster one?

Melling 10295 Oil Pump $224 (told me this worth doing while its all apart)

HYLIFT JOHNSON High Performance Lifters $440 for the set (any idea if these are any good?)
