I wish I knew that before I fitted the set I have on the old girl now, I did it when I had the engine out to do the rear oil seal, heads n cam and it was a total pain in the ass, I’ve saved that process for the next time I have to do a set, sounds like you fellas have done it a few times before, it would probably be a lot easier to do from underneath after reading the steps you listed thanks heaps for sharing that I might be fitting the bigger set sooner rather than later
June 11, 2016 at 8:35 pm #17753No need to take it to someone for exhaust work, I’m a fitter and turner by trade and a fairly competent welder, I built the system in it from the extractors back all mandrel bends and tig welded, it saved me a fortune and it’s better than anything I could pay to get built in my area, I’m interested to know how to fit pacemakers without pulling the engine out though coz I had a shit of a time fitting the set on it now, I don’t doubt it could be done but I would like to know how coz it was probably one of the most painful jobs I’ve had to do on a car yet lol
June 11, 2016 at 10:44 am #17736they’ll be going on when I get the other motor built, it’s got 1 5/8 pacemakers on it already so I’ll stick with them for now, don’t want to have to pull the engine out unless I have to
June 11, 2016 at 6:47 am #17734yeah they sounded sweet on the old Calais with twin 3″ system and vortech whine, the neighbors loved it
June 11, 2016 at 6:21 am #17733Yeah I knew I had two major restrictions with the bananas and low comp which is why I’m happy enough with it for now, and just want to strengthen the irs setup before I rebuild the balanced 304 from my Calais, it was running 20 pound of vortech boost brfore so I want to give it a full rebuild and throw some flat top pistons and a decent solid cam and manifold on it and then see what a 304 can do, just hope the t5 lasts long enough to get a t56 for the old girl, it should be pretty cranky then
June 10, 2016 at 5:47 pm #17708hey Paul, I’m pretty happy with the 284 cam and bananas, however they aren’t stock, it’s a fataz highflowed manifold port matched to the ported heads still not as good as an aftermarket manifold no doubt but like I said I’m pretty happy with the setup for now, it’s basically just ported heads flowed manifold 70mm throttle, 284 cam, yt roller rockers, factory stock bottom end and ice ignition, making 210rwhp and 800ft torque so it’s safe to say it’s a whole lot better than stock, running through a t5 and stock 3.08 LSD, next step is m80 diff and later model brakes with a strengthened cradle
June 6, 2016 at 8:27 am #17598I might just wait till I swap to the balanced/crankier engine then, atleast that way I’ll already have the engine out for the swap and it’ll save me going through the struggle of removing the old ones and fitting the bigger set for no real gain, as I’m sure most people on here would know how painful it can be fitting extractors on the earlier commodores, it’s no fun at all
June 5, 2016 at 6:49 pm #17557thanks cava, so I’m guessing it’s not really that important then I might just remove mine aswell

June 5, 2016 at 6:06 am #17535yeah I had guages under the radio in the Calais it wasn’t a big deal to keep an eye on things down there while driving, it’s neat and out of the way with them down there too
June 4, 2016 at 6:32 pm #17532I assumed it was a surge/pulse damper of some sort but I’m not 100% sure, if anyone knows what it is I’d like to know too
June 4, 2016 at 3:13 pm #17529I use the penrite hpr30 in the ss, but I was using pm lubricants racing 50 in the Calais due to the previous owner swearing it was the best oil for it, mind you it was vortech blown and heavily modified but the pm oil isn’t cheap at all

February 15, 2016 at 10:31 am #14152it should be safe enough to run the cam in and to move it in and out of the shed till you get a new chip for it I wouldn’t be driving it on the road till it has a proper tune to suit the cam though, I just put my new chip from ace performance in the ss and I couldn’t be happier the old girl run beautifully now, can’t wait to get it back on the road
February 12, 2016 at 2:01 pm #14068it all depends what other modifications you’ve done, admittedly I only have a 284 cam but I have ported heads, flowed and port matched banana inlet and roller rockers and I ran my cam in without a tune it wasn’t exactly happy but it still ran ok
