Geez you guys must think I crap on a bit hehehe. Did a quick bit of research through some manuals I have, I found that the shoes themselves look pretty similar. However the method of mounting appears significantly different. Now I haven’t actually changed VE park brake shoes so I don’t know any ‘cheats’ for the job. According to the manual, to replace VE shoes require a press to remove the hub from the rear knuckle assembly and you end up destroying the bearing, and the hub bearing drive shaft nut and washer need to be replaced. Still not a 100% guarantee I know. I also did a parts search for them and keep coming up with ‘VT on’ as a description.

Hey NickVR. I was just going with my experience of Dayco belts. Have them on both my cars and also customers have purchased them for me to fit and almost all of them squeal. I wasn’t aware Dayco had changed their manufacturing so I will see what happens. Appreciate the feedback on them though.

Ok, did a quick search and couldn’t find anything for the handbrake shoes but there are differences in the rotors as follows:

    VT – diameter = 286 mm, hat height = 78.6 mm, thickness = 16 mm, centre hole diam = 70 mm

    VE – diameter = 302 mm, hat height = 56 mm, thickness = 22 mm, centre hole diam = 67.4 mm

As you know, the hand brakes shoes run inside the ‘hat’ and there is 22mm difference in hat height. Again, without actually having both components in front of me to measure, it’s hard to give a definitive answer.

Hey mate, hope you don’t mind me asking. what are you planning to do? Might be easier for ppl to give you advice is all. Cheers.

Without looking too hard, I do think there are a couple of differences. I will check the specs.

I work in warehousing for a performance boat manufacturing company, and as a mechanic in my spare time.

Much prefer mechanic work though. Originally wanted to be a fighter pilot in the RAAF, but took the easy way out cos I was lazy then lol.

Wow didn’t know they existed, will have a think about that :)

Yeah Subarus run them but they can be a pain in the butt to fit, and are generally a replace item whenever it has to come off the engine. Also, steer away from Dayco belts – they tend to squeal, I generally use Gates brand or some form of oem belt.

Ha, finally I can offer some advice!! In my experience as a mature age apprentice mechanic, I have actually fixed a number of seat belt issues. You need to access the retractor reel, give it a thorough vacuum out around the whole area as it will probably have 20 + years of crud in there. Then get yourself some white spirits, wet a cloth with it and run it up and down the length of the belt until its clean. Then get some silicone spray, and pull the belt out the full length, then lube all the reel mechanism with the spray. Keep doing this while you then let the belt retract, then pull the belt out again etc etc until it frees up. Should be good to go :)

Cool, thanks Gary. Did you use a plasma cutter to get the slot that accurate? It’s so neat lol.

This is actually one of the areas I was curious about strengthening on both my vr and vs. Fortunately both of my irs cradles are in good shape still. Thanks for posting this up guys, very helpful. Just out of interest Gary, did you have a slot cut into the frame top and bottom for the ten mm plate that was welded in? I’m just trying to work out exactly what you’ve done there is all.
