Got a good shot of the new front 330mm brakes inside the stock 17in wheels.
After I got the new heavy duty clutch installed the other week, found the cruise control didn’t work anymore. I thought it was probably the brake light switch, which has been playing up since I had the pedal box replaced after it broke at my first track day in Feb. See here for details – http://www.commodoresplus.com.au/forums/topic/lakeside-track-sprint-day-first-experience/
The real problem is that manuals didn’t come out with cruise control – I bought this off my mate, who was second owner, and he bought it from holdens as 5yo 2nd hand car, and he asked them for the factory cruise control to be put in. So holdens hacked it together for him. As you can see in the pic below – 1 is the clutch pedal switch, 2 is the brake pedal switch, and 3 is where they hacked into the loom to connect the clutch pedal switch in series. So they are ‘normally closed’ switches where voltage goes through the switches so the cruise control module knows that you have not pushed either pedal, or you have pushed the pedals so it turns off.
The mount for the clutch pedal is a full home brew hack as a hole had to be drilled into my replacement pedal box, and it’s just a big screw through a tight hole holding it in.
NB: The cable tie, on the brake pedal switch, is the auto elecs hack to stop the brake pedal switch getting out of position/alignment, which has happened a couple of times.
So I got my head down there with multimeter with continuity turned on, and found the clutch pedal switch wasn’t being pushed enough (closing the switch), as if I lifted the pedal I got the multi to buzz. So after I got the clutch replaced, the clutch pedal must no longer rebound/spring back up to the same position, not closing the switch, hence stopping the cruise control from turning on…
From the pic it looks like there maybe some more adjustment on the thread, but when I had my head down there I couldn’t see any, so I did a little hack with a bit of rubber and electrical tape. Let’s see how long it holds together… did a drive down the highway today, 1 hour each way, and the cruise control was fine.

Posts: 227**i’ve changed the thread title, so this will be my track day thread, instead of creating a third go thread…**
right new semi slicks purchased – I got Hankook RS3 / Z222 semi slicks (235/45/R17) for $189 each on a spare set of wheels, so I can swap em at the track.
Marked the back of the tyres with paint pen so can see how they were differently, with the intention of getting them swapped around at some stage. This is cos of the clockwise direction of the track will wear one side more and the tyres are directional. You can read more on the tyre selection at http://www.commodoresplus.com.au/forums/topic/semi-slicks-for-track-day-your-experiences/
All booked into next track day with BMW car club qld on Fri May 29th. This is full track day and will get up to 12 sets of 6 hot laps, for only $195.
Since the last track day I have had the front brakes upgraded, new heavy duty clutch, new leads, new rotor button/cap. You can read more about the brake upgrade at http://www.commodoresplus.com.au/forums/topic/vs-brake-upgrades/
Can’t wait hopefully can take a few seconds off my PB of 1:10.03 and be more consistent.
Also got a laser thermometer so I can check out the temp of the brakes and tyres. Will also keep track of the tyre pressures. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261459772472
Also organised to catch up with a mate that has done lakeside tons to go through my youtube clip together, as he says he has a few tips on the raceline for me. Youtube clip can be found up above or here http://www.commodoresplus.com.au/forums/topic/lakeside-track-sprint-day-second-go/#post-5128

Posts: 227I was initially very keen on NT05’s and there are quiet a few good reviews of them online, but then I came across forum threads like these:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=426849
Plenty of people saying RS3 on those
Then came across the hankook media release saying 2014 Motor mag outright tyre winner – http://www.hankooktyre.com.au/compmed/News_View.aspx?pageNum=5&subNum=5&ChildNum=4&Seq=286
Then to put the nail in the coffin, RS3’s were cheaper ($10)….

Posts: 227Plan to keep an eye on the pressures to see if it has a big effect. Apart from the bigger brakes on the front the car is the same, and don’t plan to be late braking. Seen a few people with laser temp gauges at the track, will see if I can borrow one.
Found this Hankook catalogue which has some info about scuffing, pressure, temperature, wear, heat cycles.
(go to page 10 ) – http://www.competitiontyres.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Hankook-Handbook.pdf
After a bit of a ring around, booked in to get 235/45/R17 for $189 ea fitted/balanced.
Anyone know much about scuffing in semi slick tyres?

Posts: 227so after a bit of research it appears there are two types of semi-slicks.
– “Summer tyres” as they are called overseas, which are track semi slicks that can be used on the road and still get a decent amount of kilometres 5-10,000km (without track use), but are not avisable for wet weather. They are rated for high speed (W or ZR)and designed for track use. Price seems pretty comparable to high end street tyres.
– “R compound” – these are proper race tyres designed for track use that will give grip and wear like a race tyre. Designed to Price is alot higher than street or summer semi slick tyres.
so what to buy… after tons of going back and fourth, reading as many reviews as the internet could provide…
I’m going with Hankook Ventus RS-3 Z222, 235/45/17 are around $200 ea fitted.
After I had basically decided to get em, I came across this media release saying that this model won Motor magazines 2014 overall tyre winner. http://www.hankooktyre.com.au/compmed/News_View.aspx?pageNum=5&subNum=5&ChildNum=4&Seq=286

Posts: 227My mechanic really didn’t want to go down the VT or VE upgrade path, not really too sure why, but he doesn’t need the work so trust him… I do track work so I did want a setup for the track, so this setup was his recommendation. Kit was $1500, but those DBA rotors are close to $500. Definitely could have been done cheaper.
