Posts: 5 777I’d put money on it it’s NOT just VW…
I agree, for it to have remained a secret for so long makes me think there is some sort of gentlemen agreement between the other makers. I wonder how many other manufacturers are having secret meetings right now working out how to handle it is it comes out they were cheating too..

September 27, 2015 at 4:35 pm #9651How stupid are they to not simply have the tune change by a power Eco button

Posts: 102yeah there’s got to be others doing the same thing. Still won’t stop me from keeping all VWs in my garage though! (VC has its own shed;) )
fact is they don’t meet a super strict emmissions law, big woop.. They are amazing cars vw obviously just tried to say they were even better than they were.

Posts: 5 777yea i agree but also disagree. I mean its a law, everyone else is passing it (supposedly) I think it shows a lot of contemp to just cheat to pass it. what else are they lying about? is the L/100 reading on your dash bs for example. I reckon its pretty crap from a gernam marque thats so respected.
September 29, 2015 at 9:27 pm #9716I doubt many if any are actually passing it without some sort of fudge…

The problem is it doesn’t take much to work out that your L/km reading is lying. It also wouldn’t take much to discover that the claimed power output was wrong. Just about everything else that is claimed about a car can be pretty easily measured by the masses, so it doesn’t leave much room to cheat. Even safety requirements are tested by NCAP and so on.
But emissions tests are a relatively new concept to 90% of the population, and they would never get their car tested. Neither would a cop who pulls you over tell you to go get a new VW emissions tested. Then of course even if you did, it doesn’t sound like many (if any) tests are actually conducted on the road, so the car would still “pass the test” if conducted on a dyno.
It’s a niche that VW exploited. Morally, it’s obviously wrong, but I wouldn’t assume that VW are lying about a bunch of other things too. And as said above, a power/eco button on the dashboard combined with their “cheat” system may have been enough to avoid them getting caught, or at least stop them getting prosecuted.
It will be interesting to see what transpires…
