I got the Big Brake Kit. The VE kit basically. I want something bigger on the rear. Might have to do the VT – VZ upgrade. Got a rear frame in the backyard. Then get an upgrade for it. Car will have 18 s at lowest 20s most of the time. So, Gary, where is this thread to guide me in the upgrade?

Best to try and keep to locally available parts unless you don’t mind spending big on replacement rotors. I bought a $2k front kit on clearance but replacement rotors are $700+ a pair just for rings (2 piece rotor). They are no longer on my daily.

I’d go something where rotors are available from rda/dba. For the track car I had the 4 piston calipers from the above mentioned kit adapted to 330x32mm HSV upgrade rotors because the rotors were $200-$250 a pair where I sourced them. Yet to upgrade the rears because cars not even rolling yet

Depends a bit I think on what you chooses and how many k’s you plan on doing, mine are two piece and I reckon not too bad cost wise to replace given the stopping power.

That’s an example of what I mean though. With dollar conversion you’re looling at $680 for two rotor rings (assuming that price is each) for 330mm rotors. I think freight was going to be around $100 because of weight. Rotor hats need to be changed periodically too. If you track it then you’ll burn through rotors quicker than a weekend cruiser and it will start to add up. At least if you buy parts available domestically you aren’t subject to fluctuating dollar. Not saying do or dont but just providing my experience.

ok, brakes have been upgraded! Yet to give them a test yet, but they seem good.

Ended up getting 330mm DBA 4000 T3 slotted rotors with PBR dual piston calipers (same model as BF XR8 i’m told), braided lines, new master cylinder and pads(?). ABS compatible.

    link to rotors – http://www.dba.com.au/products/clubspec-t/4000-t3/

can’t find anything on the PBR calipers (model no. K247-06C 5).

    some pics

Where’d you get the kit from? Hoppers Stoppers? I got a similar kit years ago on my old 5ltr and found the braking performance pretty good.

My mechanic sorted it out – he’s a bit hush on details, prob worried i’ll find out how much he ripped me off, but I imagine them or sydney race brakes.

Other reason I went with this set up was I could tell insurance I upgraded the brake to VS Senator 215i front brakes and could get away without a mod plate (qld). If I went willwood’s (or bigger or more pistons) they would stick out like dogs balls.

Nice work, only issue I have with the PBR calipers (and I know I am going to get roasted over this) is to me they are just plain butt ugly.  (gets flame suit)

Agree Gary, but wanted to keep it under the radar…. I will say they are pretty shinny, but i’m sure that’ll wear off very quick.

I do think they are the smart option if your going for a nice solid performance and easy upgrade that doesn’t cause any other issues btw.

I have the big brake kit from DBR, has 330 roters with VE calipers running on dog bones to fit. Came with hoses etc and cost about 600 bucks, want to get some rears

My mechanic really didn’t want to go down the VT or VE upgrade path, not really too sure why, but he doesn’t need the work so trust him… I do track work so I did want a setup for the track, so this setup was his recommendation. Kit was $1500, but those DBA rotors are close to $500. Definitely could have been done cheaper.

One thing if you really start tracking it a bit you may want to look at is installing a brake bias adjuster.  It’s dead easy to fit, and will just allow you to tweak the front/rear bias exactly how you want it.  As long as you cant reach it from the driving position is perfectly legal, so in my case its in the bay alongside the ABS module.  Cheap as too.

Hey Gary, got a write up on that brake bias adjuster and pics of your setup? Kinda keen to look into that.

I just bought a basic knob style wilwood proportioning valve to suit 10mm flare nut with bubble flare. Think was around $100 but haven’t gotten around to mounting it. Bought several meters of brake line and flare buts from race brakes in Sydney. Was going to mount in cab but it was suggested if anything let go that being sprayed with hot brake fluid would be unpleasant so when the time comes I’ll look to mount under car and hopefully just drill a hole for the knob to poke through. Found it quite difficult to flare with the supercheap flaring kit I borrowed and no vice or work bench. Flaring a cut line on car is a real pain.
