I paintede my valley cover and as soon as I bolted it on the paint chipped at the bolt holes. Made me sad. Looks good man. Without having to read your thread all the way through, how come your rebuilding the engine?

Washers are your friend ;-)    Basically sold wrong injectors, washed the bores, didn’t bed rings in properly, leading to excessive blow by, rebuild required.  Its not all bad though, it is an opportunity to make more HP :good:

Got a couple of hours in yesterday.  Upgraded the timing chain set up, so had to remove the old lower sprocket, there’s not a lot of room behind but it needs a deep puller due to the amount of the crank sticking out.  My long puller has very chunky claws so took a little while on my bench grinder to modify it but then came off nicely.  I think I will swap the cam sprocket retaining bolts for ARP ones, seems like cheap insurance.  I have a two piece timing cover so that’s easy anyhow.  Also took some time to set up the oil pump as per Brentons instructions.  Whole thing turns beautifully so I think its all set up right.  So this weekend a little more cleaning, then will fit the windage tray, etc etc, and should hopefully pretty much have all the bottom and buttoned up.  Moving along nicely now.

Shouldn’t be a huge load on the cam bolts but ARP’s are cheap insurance considering what $$$ are in the Engine, coming along nicely make sure you have a Camera handy for the first fire up!

Yea I thought the same thing, they are $8.15 so bit of a no brainer, but cant imagine them giving any trouble.  Yea mate the world will know when it fires up :good:   :good:   :good:

Not that oil pressure is a problem on these engines but I would have used a die grinder and made some nice radius’s on the oil galleries in the block and oil pump fittings.  Every little bit helps.

I did consider that, but as you quite rightly say, especially with the priority main on the LSx oiling isn’t an issue.  That’s a must on a Holden V8 thought I believe?

Well not a must but every time the flow does a 90° turn there is a certain amount of flow/pressure loss (LJ will know the numbers) so to achieve a certain pressure/flow at the end of the system you need more pressure/flow to compensate at the start of the system to compensate for that loss.

Not needed on the ls. They make more then enough pressure.

It made plenty of power too in stock form but that doesn’t stop us from modifying it to make more.

BTW, what is more important, pressure of flow?

    It’s ij  B-)

Each 90 is = to 3 meters of straight pipe the same diameter, isn’t a huge issue in the LS series they have a fairly well thought out Oiling system.

Well that’s pretty much a wrap until the heads arrive.  Swapped over the cam gear bolts for ARP, checked, double checked then triple checked everything.

Rear housing is on, spent some time and took the sharp edge off the rear oil gallery where the barbell goes, so the O ring feel better about life when it gets installed.

Pretty much everything cleaned, inspected and assembled now that I can.

And for those playing at home, a little tip. Its good practice to remove the small welsh plug at the front of the main oil gallery so you can make sure its all thoroughly clean. But be careful, at 16mm or 5/8″ its not a size all shops carry, Luckily a Repco an hour form me had one, my local stores didn’t. So worth buying it when you order the gaskets etc.

So now its sit back and wait for nice pair of hand ported LS7 heads :-)

I vote Stihl too but the Husqvarna ones don’t look to bad either.

Yea I cant remember the model I had when I was on 2.5 acres, but it was a mid size stihl.  Just couldn’t fault it, started every time, just did what it was supposed too.
