Posts: 5 777Hi mate, yea fitting a billet 24 tooth so I can loose the Linkenfelter box. Agree seemed the right time to do it, one less thing to worry about. Once I have it out next week I actually want to sell it, so if anyone is after one for a conversion, I want $250 for it.

Tbh not sure what mallory metal is!! Looks like some research is in order
October 26, 2017 at 1:07 pm #24986It’s metal added to the crank to balance it.

Posts: 5 777Well a nice set of custom CP Bullet Pistons are ordered and underway, got a cool little extra with them that will have to wait until they arrive to show. Block gets decked and then should be finished today, so that’s effectively the short block ready to go. Also been having a bit of a good run with my 3D printed Build Ninja parts lately, which has allowed me to tip few extra $$ into the build. That led to a long discussion with the engine builder, and well, of course you can guess where that led….
So given all the good bits in the engine already like titanium valves, forged rods, priority mains oiling etc, it seems a bit of a shame to hold it back by sticking with the hydraulic cam. So we are going to go a nice custom solid cam, that will allow us to run quite a bit more lift, and also spin it to higher rpm. That should take us right up to some really nice numbers, especially given its just NA.
Given the low km’s it does the additional maintenance of going solid is offset by the fun factor. According to Brenton modern solid cams dont have the noise and maintenance quite as much as they used too. And the reason I built it like I did with the ITB’s, glide, 12bolt, rear sub frame strengthening etc more HP was always the plan. With 600hp before it was mental, this new set up should take that to a new level.

Posts: 5 777Apparently solid cams for the street have a come a long way since the days of them being noisy pigs when cold, Brenton works with Cam Motion, this is the style of cam he wants to use, have been doing a bit of research, look pretty schmick. http://www.cammotion.com/low-lash-solid-roller

Posts: 208What rockers you going to go? I want to use Crower stainless ls3 rockers. Not too keen on the aluminium type for a street car. But I can get the Comp cam aluminium set for about $1500.
November 7, 2017 at 9:06 pm #25075Good choice on goin to a solid cam I say

without looking back, I think Gary has ls7 style heads. They are different rocker to ls3 correct?
Wouldn’t trust factory rockers with trunnions?

Posts: 5 777Hi guys, Cav, yep Ls7 heads, they have very big/nice ports which is I think is one of the reasons why they respond so well to additional lift. It and the rpm should also make the ITB’s come into their own.
Can’t stay with the factory rockers as they need to be adjustable? I had already done the trunion bearing upgrade on them, so once I am done I will try and move them onto someone as they are bloody nice for factory. I haven’t picked the rockers yet, Adam at Precision is working with Brenton to give me some options.
I agree Pete, I am much more comfortable now, I think as a total package with the solid cam it will all just work so much better and get the most out of it. I am starting to think it should have the potential to make some bloody healthy power/torque numbers…

Posts: 59Recently fitted a new Solid Lifter Cam & Lifters to a mates 5 litre, with Yella Terra 1.7:1 Platinum Adjustable Roller rockers.
Was very surprised as to how quiet they were once all set up & adjusted correctly. No longer the noisy solids I remembered from days gone by.

Posts: 208Okay LS7 rockers then…wanted to know which way you were going. Aluminium or stainless.
My choice would be the stainless for a street car.

Posts: 5 777So the build is progressing, but this is the slow tedious part (machining & blueprinting). I am putting together a summary of what we have done so far and whats ordered, will post up soon.
November 17, 2017 at 9:52 am #25142Has brenton said anything about the crank? From memory the aren’t center balanced or somthing like that.
Good for decent revs?

Posts: 5 777Yea its nice, all of it will easily spin to 7,000 which is where we are designing it too. That keeps heaps of torque, more than enough power on 98, and is right around the sweet spot for my ITB set up at 60mm. He just built a nice little small block 436 cube mopar, it made 798hp on 100 octane at 7,000, 831hp on race fuel, at 7,400rpm. Mine wont make those numbers but should be mid 700s in street trim.

Posts: 5 777Got to actually do some work on it, a good mate is a ex auto electrician, he came around and we surgically removed the Lingenfelter converter box, and started the job of tidying up the loom. He needs a special crimp tool to do the injector loom plugs, but should get that done next week. Also he has suggested integrating the brake vacuum relay into the factory relay box, which is neat idea, so will do that also. Kinda regret not doing the loom myself now, its not that difficult,m and the way the guy has done it he has left lots of redundant wires in it. But meh, it works so I will leave it mostly alone and tidy up whats there.
