Posts: 535That could work very nicely. Just don’t cut up a genuine HSV grill, get a copy/replica unit.

Wondered about that, do you know if they are available?

Posts: 264Looking very nice Gary. Loving the idea you have for this bonnet. As for the grille, not sure if you can find a damaged fibreglass copy bar and cut out the grille part.

Posts: 5 777Thanks, nice work on that. Every time I went at looked at the car i just couldn’t come up with something that worked. As a couple of people said i sort of worked so hard to make all the mods stealthy I think anything would have spoiled it. I think this will sort the CAI out.
Have begun modelling up the various bits and pieces I want to make it all look neater. This is the idea I am going to try for the vents in the bonnet front. I will make them out of black ABS and screw them in, with a bit of luck will look factorish. If they work out, will probably make them available through Build Ninja in case anyone else wants to do a similar thing.

March 9, 2017 at 1:53 pm #21986So much thought going into this.. Im confident it will come up nice. Be interesting too see what sort of intake temps you are getting before and after. You still looking to vent the rear of the bonnet with early commodore rear vents?

Not sure, probably not. Sort of keen on leaving it stock now. Might go with the CAI and then see how it goes. Under bonnet temps aren’t really that much of an issue as long as the intake temps are low.

Posts: 5 777Certainly taking a hell lot of work to get to this point, but I think its worth pursuing, interested on others thoughts. Bear in mind this is on a white stuffed bonnet, so on mine that’s dark grey I think it will blend nicely. Its also VERY MUCH A PROTOTYPE!! It will be cut much straighter and aligned etc on the proper bonnet, I am having to work above my head paranoid about anything stuffing up the paint etc on the car.
So I have modeled up these vents, I am looking for it look semi factory when done, when the bonnets closed they sit pretty much smack bang over the top of the HSV grill which is what i am after. Might even make up a corresponding piece for the top of the grill if it needs it. But hats enough to show the concept with these vents.
Now going to move on to printing parts for the rear of the bulkhead, sort of these outlets if you see what i mean. They will match up with the transition pieces under the bonnet to meet up with the air-boxes.
Also whilst I am at it have finished building my 3D printer enclosure, that will now be temperature controlled, which should make printing larger thin section ABS parts more reliable and better quality.

Posts: 124I really hope i’m wrong, but I think your design might have a flaw….
Modeled up the end design for the air boxes. Have run out of ABS filament though, so might have to wait a day or so.
If you run a boxed intake to the front of the bonnet, and seal it up against the underside of the bonnet, is it possible that the two rear-most throttle bodies will be starved of air? A 454 will need a LOT of air at full noise. Judging by the relatively small volume of your ITB shrouds, and the fact that all of the air will be coming from the front of them, I’m worried the front throttle bodies will get plenty of air, but as the air flows and gets sucked into every individual throttle body, there will basically be none left for the rear ones. I hope i’m wrong, but after seeing the science that goes into a FAST or even standard LS intake manifold to keep the airflow even to each cylinder, I worry that your setup will starve the rear ports of air under high vacuum.
I’m not an expert, hopefully one can tell me i’m wrong?

Posts: 5 777Thanks for posting but I don’t think your right, reason being that when I bought the induction set up, I also bought the carbon fibre air boxes which pretty much are like I have designed, in fact they are smaller. They are made for the Corvette, and the small aluminium trumpets are part of them. Problem is the infeed kicks up and so fouls the cross member on the underside of the bonnet at the front of them on a VR so they don’t fit, you literally don’t come close to closing the bonnet. Cutting and shutting carbon fibre is out of my range of expertise, hence designing my own. This is more of a cold air feed than anything else, and its a street car, the amount of time its going to spend sitting on 7,000rpm is bugger all anyway. Anything has to be better than how its been, which is seriously drawing air from a very confined and extremely hot space. In the end the dyno will tell anyways.
