Posts: 5 777Well my baby is home safe and sound, and tucked away. Have got a bit of a plan in my head, think I can sort it much neater at the rear there. Actually looking forward to working on it again.
Just looking at protecting the plug leads. Anyone with 4 into 1’s like mine will run into a similar problem on the #8 at the rear where the exhaust curls up and over keeping the length equal. It just means it snakes around the plug a bit. So looking at Summit etc I can get these, I actually bought a set of them in red a while back but they looked pretty ordinary, but I see I can get them in orange that I think may work better, and sometimes form has to give way to function.
So anyone used them, are they any good? If not any other ideas oh giving the plug leads and plugs some heat protection?

I think black will look a lot better IMO.

Posts: 5 777Cool, thanks guys. I think I might also consider doing some custom stuff on my 3d printer to support the cables and plug leads. Will see how that all goes once I get it apart so I can see whats happening exactly and what it needs. Any of you with an LS conversion may be interested in what I come up with
August 4, 2016 at 8:52 am #18872I’ve used that type setup in black on a V6 with 1 3/4″ headers. Pretty much the only thing that stopped them melting in a few thousand km.
More generic name for them is “fire sleeve” you can get them at industrial supply stores in free length and then cut to size.

Posts: 5 777Yea thanks for that, I actually had some of that on the one that burnt. Problem is its not designed to actually sit against the header which is I think what happened. I think I will use some of the woven stuff in black as above at the plug, then do some work to route and support the leads so they don’t touch the header. The main problem is #8 as the pipe snakes around it and also the booster is there making it tight for room Plan is to pull it apart over the week end then give some thought to how to neaten it all up. Be good to neaten up the electrical loom, vac lines etc anyway whilst I am at it. There’s actually not much left really i haven’t bloody touched.
On another note I am about to put in an order for a pair of the g Force cradle boxes that correct the negative camber at a lower ride height. Not sure when i will get around to dropping the rear out and doing it as its a pretty big job but be good to have the gear here for if I do.

Posts: 5 777Made a start today, thought I would post this, this is what I am up against. Might have a small grumble. Seriously I am so dissapointed in the quality of the loom. The guy who did it was a really nice guy, and it all works, its juss very very messy. This is the one thing that’s a left over from the disaster with the first tuner, as he recommended him. Spent the whole day and have got it all much better though. Have also repainted the valley cover and spent a long time unpicking stuff and routing it more neatly. Tomorrow hopefully once the valley cover paint is dry overnight I can put some of it back together. I am also doing quite a few tidy ups around the place, as its sort of where the wiring, vacuum and coil packs all come together. I just want it all neater and easier to trouble shoot. Swapping the coil was easy as, I really like the way they are all mounted, it just needs more room around it. Anyways not much of a post but hopefully tomorrow will have more to show for my efforts.

Posts: 5 777Bit of a progress pic from Sat, actually took me bloody ages to get to this, but its starting to come together, imo much much better than before. Trying to do a heap of other small stuff at the same time. I have had an elite catch can to go to replace the cheapo carbo look alike, so that’s next on the agenda, plan is to neatly run the vac lines down the valley alongside the cable looms, should keep it all neat. I know the loom across the back is pretty ugly but you don’t see it at all when the intake is on, I just wanted it held up securely out of the way.
August 8, 2016 at 8:10 pm #18927Funny how we’ll spend ages on getting wiring right due to OCD despite nobody else would even notice.
Looks heaps neater more importantly workable.Nice!

Posts: 5 777Bit of an update, sorta feel stalled in a way, my son got back from 6 months overseas so been a bit tied up with Dad duties so not a huge amount of shed time. Also still waiting on some parts, have some black heat shields on order, also a new lead to match the set. Have got most of the breather system sorted though, and the hoses run. Today scored an NPT tap set so I can do a second port in the Elite can to make it much neater with the rocker covers coming in from either side. Also found a universal Z shaped hose I was able to use on the rear rocker cover which sits way neater. Also today placed the order with G-Force for the cradle boxes, not sure when I will pull the trigger on that. Hopefully this week end get a clear run at it and get it all back together and running again. Itching to drive it.

Posts: 5 777New black spark plug protector boots are here , also some stainless cable ties I plan on trying to secure them nicely to the plug lead end (I love bits!!) So pretty much have everyhting to get it all back together. I might spend a while and give the ITB’s a thorough de-grease and clean, then get everything back to looking mint again. Feeling pretty keen to get it all sweet again running again, weathers looking shite so might not get any rubber frying in (sorry Cav!!)
August 19, 2016 at 5:32 pm #19148Post some snaps of the boots and ties. I’m actually looking to get some.

Posts: 289Looking good Gary, I’m interested in the spark plug lead covers they look neat and the heat protection would come in handy as well.
August 22, 2016 at 8:28 am #19193Gotta get your self some AN spanners for the braided fittings. Stops them from scratching.
Can ya get some braids with the braided hose clamp on the Catch can?

Posts: 5 777Thanks, so the spark plug heat shields are a bit of an issue to fit. Not sure they are all like it but these (Aeroflow) have a small round wire ring at the end opposite the white stitching inside the boot itself. I am guessing the idea is you are supposed to fit them before you fit the rubber boots to the leads as they wont fit over them because the ring is too small. Problem is with my ceramic leads i couldn’t pull the leads apart. So I carefully folded the boot back in on itself, put a small cut with a razer blade, then rut the ring in half and pulled it out of the boot (hope that makes sense). I then fitted them and used some nice stainless steel cable ties to fit them on, turned out pretty neat in the end. Your right I think they should protect the leads. On the drivers side I need to keep the leads up more vertical to stop them touching the pipe that goes across and down the back. Cav was right with going black, they seem to blend in nicely.
I do have a full set of the proper AN fitting spanners. But this car is streeter not a show car. Whilst I am as careful as I can be I do everything myself on my own with no one else to hold anything. And I defy anyone to build a and work on a car like this and not cause the odd scratch here or there.
For me I drew the line at braid for vacuum lines. Again its not a show car, for some reason photos show things up a little differently. No one who has ever seen the bay in real life makes any comments at all about the black vac hoses. When i cruised it yesterday I pulled up at the servo and flipped the hood to check everything was right. A guy filling up alongside started chatting about it, he was pretty blown away by it.
