Yea mate, i ran it on e85 for the first year. I realise you get more benefit with a boosted engine, but you can still run more timing and compression with a Na engine. And you also get the benefit of a cooler charge. Just remember when the valves are closed and the spark plug fires the engine doesnt know how the charge got in there.  ;-)

Generally e85 is more beneficial power wise for big Comp big cam ordeals when the extra timing is needed but not achievable due to 98 tuning limitations.

I doubt urs is at that point. You will defiantly see a change in the cooling aspect but, again yours prob doesn’t get hot.

Was more getting at a cost vs gain thing. It’s not like it’s 40cents cheaper then 98 like it was 5 years ago.

Gotcha, sorry understand now.  Yea trouble with me for 85 is its hard to get.  And pumping out of drums sort of spoils the whole streeter aspect.  My eventual plan has always been high comp, big cam, E85, I reckon that should get me near 750hp maybe.  Then its a 250hp squirt of giggle gas for 1,000 hp of genuine streeter NA goodness.  (well nos is sort of chemical boosting but you get my drift!!)

    Btw, like the new banner?

Hey gary how low does your exhaust and mufflers sit from the ground. Looking at having a go at my own exhaust. I reckon il stick with twin 2 and a half inch though over 3. I just went over your thread again looking at how you did yours and turned out pretty awesome especially been able to say you did it yourself.

Hi mate, well when the car went through Regency it had a full 100mm clearance everywhere which is the legal requirement.  If you look at this pics you can see what I did was fit the centre mufflers as high as I could. I figured I cant do anything more about that so made the bottom of the them the reference for the lowest point if that makes sense.  So you can see how I vertically dog legged the entry of the pipes into them so they don’t sit any lower than that.

I used the same approach for under/around the diff.  But bear in mind I have a 12 Bolt which is bloody massive compared to a regular IRS diff.  Tbh I have lowered the car a little since getting it through Regency.  I reckon if I got pulled over and they were feeling picky they could ping me.  But it would be very simple to raise again, and I sort of think its a risk I am willing to take given everyhting else is 100% legal.

Btw I would say definitely say have a go at doing it yourself.  I really really enjoyed doing it.  I reckon it was one of the most fun parts of the build.  I had never tig welded before or gone anywhere near an exhaust.  I just have a regular Makita cut off saw, and bought by bends etc and off I went. Its not hard, but it is time consuming if you are ocd :good:    From memory buying the TIG, and the all the parts from di phillipo, it all came in at under 2 grand.  Which I reckon for a custom twin 3″ stainless system was pretty bloody good.

The most difficult part to get right on the exhausts of IRS cars (in my opinion) is the section between the rear muffler and the main mufflers. Getting sufficient drive shaft clearance at full droop whilst maintaining ground clearance and flow is a pain…

Yea agreed, took a while to work out mine, the pipe by the trailing arm was fairly straight forward as it sort of follows the edge of the arm.  The one alongside it was a pita, where it goes under the nose of the diff.

Another fun little cruise.  Took a good mate who hadn’t been in it before.  Lots of laughs.  Couple of quotes “fark, if you don’t get a stiffy riding in this you aren’t a man”  Then at the end I got a big smile and “Gary, I am actually lost for words right now”  So much fun, zero issues so far.  Only thing I noticed putting it back in the shed is it seems to now have a lot of negative camber of the rears.  Maybe the tyre joint dint lock up the adjusters?  Will have to call them during the week and see what they can do about that.  All part of the fun though, good times :good:

So I think i mentioned before, in one way I built my car wrong way round, having it painted first, then spending 3 years building it.  Would have been easier painting it last to save some stress.  Incidentally I purposely did it that way as I knew if I had this beautiful body done it would motivate me to finish it, my family has a bit of a history of not actually finishing builds/restos.

So the downside is along the way I picked up a couple of small nicks and blemishes in the paint here and there.  Nothing huge though.  There was also the small scratch the Kombi guy accidentally caused when he knocked over the ladder onto it     I have always planned to get it mint again once the build was done.

Today I have had a guy I have used before who is a bit of a guru on repairing those kind of blemishes.  So he has just sent me some photos, its looking great again, cant wait to see it in real life now.  He also sent the nicest text message saying what a pleasure it was working on it, and he thanked me for trusting him with it which was nice.

He just sent me these :good:

Well this is very exciting! I think some of you will know that my daughter Georgie and I have gone into partnership and decided to start our own online 3D CAD design and printing business. The idea came out of some of the parts I designed for HSV454. Our product line is fairly modest right now but we plan to add cool products as we go along. Tonight is the official launch of the online store.  We would love you to go take a look and let us know what you think  :good:
