Posts: 5 777Well hello fellow Commodore enthusiasts I’m back!!
So I have been away for just on three months in Europe, flew in late last night. Of course one of the first things to do was go out to the shed and make sure project lock down had been a success. Glad to say everything is exactly as I left it. So first order of business is to gather a few of the secret squirrel bits an bobs that had been removed and get her back running again
Then its a few things to take it back to more enjoyable on the street like back to the 3: exhaust, lower her a little from grandpa spec mode and get it tuned a little less lean. Then I guess I need to fry a set of tyres to keep Cava happy, I think I will run it with the current gearbox just to have some fun again, but I will need to check in with the boys and see how far the glide has come along.
Sooooo looking forward to taking it for a real street legal cruise!!
I guess I need some time to catch up on everyone’s builds etc, so whats been happening?
Just took this, apologies for the crappy quality phone pic, but she looks so purdy all tucked away in her 3 month hibernation

Posts: 5 777OK very lame I know, but thought I would take a vroom vroom video. So went and fitted the bits and pieces, forgot one thing, funny when you can’t remember yourself everything you did to make it theft proof! Anyhow, once I sorted that it fired up nicely. Feels and sounds very lean to me, which I sort of know given the fantastic emissions test result, I think it will be good to put a little fuel in it though to keep it more on the safe side of that curve!! Anyhow, nice to feel it fire up again. Every time I take a video it makes the fuel pumps on start up sound like a 747 but its not that bad live, anyhow, at least when you hear the buzz stop you know its show time!

Posts: 5 777So I have been back at work this week, today thought I wonder what that box in my office is. Turns out its the Astra PS pump I bought off IJ, that has turned up whilst i was away!
Man its a lot bigger in real life than I had pictured in my mind. Problem is I don’t have a lot of room to hide stuff now, currently under the guard/front there’s the oil filter, oil cooler, brake vac tank & pump, and also the window washer bottle.
I think I might put this project on hold for a while, and run with the mechanical pump as is until I feel inclined to tackle it. I think better to concentrate on getting it nice and usable as is before I go tackling any improvements that aren’t totally necessary.
This is the pump
August 12, 2015 at 5:29 pm #8376hey mate are you able to give me some dimensions for the power steering pump im thinking the vl could use one but my space is limited aswell
August 12, 2015 at 6:29 pm #8377Engine Porn. What fuel pumps are you running mate? Currently researching a fuel system for mine ATM.

Posts: 5 777Might post them in a separate thread in the tech section too for others. If it works ok would be a good mod, especially if your cooking steering fluid etc.

I’m quite interested in this mod have you researched it much?

Yea a bit, a few guys have done it, thinking it through it seems like a good idea. I think its worthwhile if your pulling a lot of revs, the ps pumps don’t really like screaming along, a fluid cooler would help with that of course. It also will look a lot neater with the pump and pulley removed, just one less thing on the front of the engine. I know aesthetics isn’t on top of everyone’s priority list, but it is part of the equation

Posts: 5 777Have found myself a few times wanting this info, I posted it in the exhaust section a while back but thought i would throw it into my build thread also.
Measuring car noise levels isn’t hard, but it depends a lot on year, number of cylinders etc, so you need to make sure exactly what limit applies to you and how its measured.
here is a link to the standard, go to the download section and download the pdf.

This is the exact test procedure

This is the page most of us are interested in
And this as well
So for example my car, a V8 manufactured in 1993, has to be under 91dB, measured at 3,300 rpm, measured 500mm from the tip at an angle of 45 degrees.

Has anyone documented the process at all?

OK mate, so have been able to do this.
It measures 260mm high from the very bottom to the top of the black fill cap.
The base is sort of rectangular, so excluding the two bits that protrude that are the mounting points its 150mm x 110mm
Trust that helps

Posts: 5 777So the return is the angled barb up into the fluid reservoir, so its just a rubber hose and clamp sort of deal. The supply is threaded, not sure the thread, maybe 3/8″ BSP. The wiring I don’t know much about. All it needs is to be fed by 12V supply from the engine (via a relay), so if the engines running its running.
August 14, 2015 at 4:50 pm #8455thanks for that mate looks like i may be able to use it sorry about the thread hijack lol
