Majority of 60’s are 2 piece case, 65 is an attempt to address a few of the flaws in the 60’s and a damn good Trans! (the Trans in the Lexcen is based on 65 components)

Dunno, my VR was only a 6 so had a 700 in it, everything else I’ve had has been later model so you could be correct!

my VS has a 4L60E (8HBD) with a 2 Piece case (Factory 1998 VS Transmission-same as used in the VT)

Holden swapped to these sometime during 1997

checked ebay and there is a 7HBD which is a single case trans for v8

there are other 1997 v6 one’s on there which some are single and some are 2 piece

    Maybe when VT was released?

I was always of the impression that VT was the first model to get the 2 piece cases, obviously some of the last VS versions that they continued to produce after the release of the VT also copped the 2 piece case transmissions.  I have a 2 piece case 4l60e (8Hxx) from a 98 VS ute sitting in the garage.

Talking to a transmission expert these later 4l60e’s are better than the first 4l60e found in the VR/VS models.

To my knowledge the 60 and 65e are pretty similar. 5 pinion planetaries and some other minor stuff is the only change.

5 Pinion was a HUGE change, the 60 suffers from no Centre support at all the 5 pinion planetary gear set helps in this regard as there’s always a loaded gear supporting both shafts!

I’ve seen a few “Expert Mods” where people try to add a bearing between the input and output shafts and the machine work makes an already fragile part weaker and prone to fail.

If it was huge HP then no question. Mine is only a stocky with a bit of work nothing special.

I’ll talk to the trans shop soonish and see how we go. I will let you know the direction I end up taking though. Watch this space……… and this one too.

Don’t be scared, the electronic side of them is pretty much bullet proof and the benefits are well worth having, 4L80E is a TH400 with overdrive and a lockup Converter!

Yeah I no. But making a 4L80 fit is another issue.

OD doesn’t worry me to be honest. I’m not one to car if it sits on 3500 on the fwy

NickVR – My opinion only, but there’s next to no point getting a 2300rpm stall. That is only a few hundred RPM higher than stock. A properly built higher RPM stall is fine for the street. Even a stock 5L will benefit greatly from a 3000-3500rpm stall. Get a lock up item and have the best of both worlds.

My 4k convertor flashes to 4200rpm on full load, but with lock-up its perfectly streetable.

A 4spd with overdrive and lockup T/C is gives the opportunity to run short gears and a decent stall while maintaining freeway driveability. I know I go on about it a lot but 4.11s and 4ooorpm convertor on a T700 spins at under 2500rpm on the freeway. Food for thought.

4L80e is a great box from what I have seen/read, basically 400 with o/drive. Its the same old story though, its finding someone in Aus that actually knows how to build one, and they are physically very big and heavy.

I agree with Nick though, for his application, a nicely built 4l60/65 would be perfect for him.  No modifications at all, plenty strong enough, overdrive, whats not to like in a cruiser.

pretty much what I was looking for mine, I only originally wanted a 2500rpm stall, ended up going a 3000 rpm 10 inch lock up stall

As for the trans cooler I’ve gone for the biggest one b&m make (made by LONG- which from what I found is part of Dana) Long is used from factory on some VS Towpacks (which was what was on my VS to start with)

mounted pretty much in the centre of the radiator

Can’t see any reason why not it’s not much bigger than a 60 Pete.

    (80 left, 60 right)
