Posts: 5 777Interesting, thanks for that, so any ideas why they did it?

Posts: 535Was supposed to make the engine quieter/smoother etc.
The original LS engines in Commodores sounded pathetic. Stock they still are nothing exciting at all really. Not much point in owning a V8 if you can’t even hear it :(
My local exhaust guy had a huge stack of factory VT exhaust systems stacked up in the corner as every man (and his dog) was in there getting custom systems made to improve the noise.
May 25, 2017 at 4:38 pm #22919Yep stock they just sound like arse… More like vacuum cleaners than V8’s.
When I first converted the Tonner to V8 I left the 2.5″ single on it till it was registered as an 8, man was it pathetic..

Posts: 5 777They def have a bad reputation for the sound. I like mine, but i guess it isnt stock. Seems a strange change to make without considering the consequences. Who buys a v8 you cant hear!
May 25, 2017 at 7:41 pm #22923Possibly had an emissions benefit as well..
So much of modern engine development is driven by the need to meet current standards that’s why there is so much power to be had through a tune on stock parts.
Compare this to old school modifications to get the same increases meant a lot of major parts needed to be upgraded at the sacrifice of driveability and economy, we really are living in a golden age for petrol heads!

Posts: 5 777Totally agree with that, modern engines are amazing, I mean in the old days you had to do stuff like balance and blueprint, these days they are basically perfect out of the factory. And modern fuel injection and the wizardry that goes with it just makes modern engines in another league. I can reach in, turn the key and the Senator starts, no pumping the throttle, no choke it just fires.
June 5, 2017 at 9:42 pm #23038Ran the Fat Car at a 2 day event in Swan Hill, 2nd in class and 6th overall and 1st in class and 5th overall.
Think I’ve burnt a valve so the motor needs to come out and I now have a few ideas of upgrades to help sort it’s Schizo handling traits so will do those at the same time as the engine freshen up!

June 9, 2017 at 6:38 pm #23068Nice. You don’t stuff around.
Collects a bit of dirt and dust don’t it.
June 9, 2017 at 7:12 pm #23073Really curious to see what condition it’s in after 5 years…
Yeah it’s one of those things they get filthy…
June 9, 2017 at 8:16 pm #230755 years is a good stint. Any plans for extra work or just freshen and leave as is.
June 9, 2017 at 8:27 pm #23076Yeah I think it’s not back for a performance engine, only ever had the rocker covers off it in that time, I’ll just do Rings and Bearings, I did Valve springs a few months back and it really doesn’t need any more power for what I’m doing..
I let it rev a few times at Swan Hill and scared the shit out of myself so it has plenty!
June 9, 2017 at 8:59 pm #23077That’s always a good sign hahaha
i hope mine scares me.
June 10, 2017 at 12:16 am #23082If it’s enough to scare actual shit out of ya then it’s 1hp too much

Posts: 775yip you have to respect the power as one day you don’t it will bite hard
June 10, 2017 at 9:23 pm #23096I’ve had a few oh shit moments in this thing, most have been down to it’s handling traits under power so I hope to correct that with the upgrades planned.
Did a comp test today and while it all looked good I didn’t really trust the numbers so ran a Leakdown to confirm.. as suspected it’s either bent or burnt a valve..
1= 150-12% 3= 150-10% 5= 150-14% 7= 145-12%
2= 165-87% 4= 150-14% 6= 165-12% 8= 145-8%
