LOL un prepped rough degraded surface what could possibly go wrong… or up in smoke!

Today End!
Spent the morning cleaning/cataloging parts for the Monaro Trans build, this is the first 700 I’ve done and while it’s the same basic architecture as the 60 Series I normally build there are enough differences to keep me on my toes and not get complacent!
With that in mind I’ll do a bit each day double checking my work as I go, I’ve found a few not perfect Steels in it and will swap them out for perfect ones during the build, a couple of really interesting things with the 700 are the analog operation and the fact that you don’t need a different valve body if you want full manual control, just drill a few holes per the Shift Kit instructions and away it goes, “Stick Shift” to do this with a 60/65/70 it’s a $1000 in parts…

Posts: 5 777Is it not worth swapping to the 5 pinion planetaries whilst its all open Ian? be great if you can post some progress pics as you go with some sort of explanation. No need to give away any secrets but I am sure a few of us would be interested in how you go about it?

For this power level nah the 5 pinions are overkill Gary, I’ll post a few updates as I go but it’s not really feasible to fully document the build as it adds so much time to the process..
May 26, 2016 at 12:45 pm #17208Today!
Shakedown run to Melbourne in the Tonner yesterday ended in abject failure…
Autopsy after lunch!
May 26, 2016 at 6:04 pm #17212Today End!
As suspected it was the other $2 part….
Rest of the Trans is fine but I decided to do a total strip/clean/reassemble just for my own peace of mind, don’t really want to be doing this again anytime soon..
May 27, 2016 at 2:51 pm #17270Today End!
Back from Melbourne, collected all the small parts I need and my supplier after “adopting” me into the family sent me across to see his Converter builder who had an exchange unit in stock saving me the trip back Monday to collect it!
Awesome people to deal with make a painful exercise so much easier!
Small thing to the left of the converter is what caused most of the issues, not quite a $2 part when you go “genuine” but a pretty insignificant bit till it goes wrong..

Posts: 5 777What is that small part IJ?
May 27, 2016 at 4:24 pm #17272It’s called a Capsule Valve Gary, in the 60’s it serves two functions, one as the exhaust for the 3/4 pack the other as a feed for the Servo, when it fails you toast the 3/4 pack and Band….
In my Lexcen Trans I fit an aftermarket Sonnax valve/regulator in as well as the factory capsule and have no further issues, in my builds for lower power I haven’t been doing this and you see the results, it’s very hit or miss so from now on every trans I do get’s a new OEM capsule and the Sonnax Reg..

It does but finding a good trans builder who knows what they are doing is a good start. Even amongst trans guys they do different things to achieve the same result. Some ideas work better than others.

I’ve been lucky with a few of my builds, the Lexcen Trans is “one with the lot” so hasn’t suffered any of this new crop of problems, I’m learning as I go and now know a few more things that are added to the must have list when building a 60 based Trans…
The Lexcen makes 600awhp and touch wood hasn’t broken any of it’s hard parts on 70K Km’s of abuse..
(most of that was in the Tonner on road tyres)
May 27, 2016 at 7:08 pm #17282What brand stall?
May 27, 2016 at 7:12 pm #17283It’s not a high stall at all Cav, reco’d stocker it’s for the tow car.
May 31, 2016 at 11:59 am #17383Today!
Pump is clearanced new bush and seal stripped cleaned and reassembled, also made a tool to change out the OEM Capsule, pite as it’s hidden deep down in one of the work tracks in the case, 2nd pic shows it’s location under the new Sonnax regulator valve, more cleaning and checking this afternoon!

Today End!
Valve Body stripped cleaned and reassembled, Also installed the Piston in the new Reverse Input drum I collected yesterday, after a couple of years running the Corvette Servo it had squeezed in the surface that the Band locks on, no big deal if you put the same band back in but if you install a fresh one it rides on the edges slips and in short time we’re back to step #1 again… hence the new drum!
