    Today End!

That there would be the problem… the $2 plastic 1>2 accumulator piston, rest of the trans is fine, I’ll replace the Lo Reverse clutch discs to be safe as they cop a hiding towing, trip down to Melbourne tomorrow to collect some parts then put it back together and in on Thursday!

    Today!

Found another broken plastic piston, the 3rd was already an Aluminium one but I’ll swap in the new one I got yesterday, bulk of the Trans is back together.

I was just reading this .. “electronic architecture enables the car to run full ABS and traction control, though it’s not yet calibrated for loose surface work.”‘”

How would you even go about this?

There’s quite a few adjustments in the ECU for Trac, I’ve had a small tweak and when I can get a chance I’ll do a full “tune” on the Trac system, just haven’t had time as other things on the car have needed attention.

    Today End!

Just nipped into the Village to collect a parcel, on Saturday I had an interesting conversation with Andrew about Brakes, seems his WRX was running out of stop so they changed Pads thinking that was the problem, from his description it’s the exact same issue I’ve had with the Lexcen since I built it..

In my case I’d been putting it down to the ABS chucking a Nanga and pumping back on the pedal, when what is actually happening is the Booster is running out of vacuum as you’re on/off the brakes a lot during the lap and on the throttle a lot so the booster doesn’t have a chance of catching up.

My way of driving around it till now has been to simply brake late and smash it into ABS and let it sort things out, as it’s inconsistent when you run out of vacuum it’s not the best solution as you either get ALL the brakes and almost stop of very little and sometimes overshoot.

With a Big Cam engine you can run into the same problem and in the past the “fix” has been to run an additional reservoir, these days thanks to China making everything there’s now a cheaper home brand CVR electric vacuum pump, so I bought one, will fit it and give it a go for next meeting, may still need to run a reservoir but I’ll see how this goes first.

Nice bit of gear all billet CNC machined, good quality motor and pressure sensor.

    What ecu?

I damaged the diff in the missus VX L67 when we first got it because of the traction control which is very aggressive.  I’ve altered the settings, got rid of the cylinder cut and greatly reduced how much timing it pulls, now when I get a little wheel spin it either does nothing or only removes a little timing, with more wheel spin it’ll pull more timing.

Not familiar with tuning software for LS engines unfortunately.

LS1 controller isn’t real adjustable for TRAC like the E38’s and it’s what I run in the Tonner so I kept things common, too old to learn more systems  ;-)

^cool pic.  I run a VE Commodore electric vacuum pump, works a treat.  That one you have does look nicely machined, mind me asking how much it was?  The VE one if you buy it new is bloody pricey but is a nice compact unit.

Didn’t even know they ran one… Mine is a CVR Clone and at $440 is half the price of the genuine one, size is the only issue I have with it but I think I have room..

Yea the VE SV6 I think it is runs one.  As I say its quite a nice compact piece of kit, I think it was around $600 though new, I mounted mine under the battery tray.

Cool, that looks tiny by comparison, works ok?

    Today!

Spent a couple of hours this morning stripping and cleaning the Valve body, glad I did as there was a LOT of Rubbish in it from the Trans failure.

Finished the assembly just have to make a Gasket for the Transfer case (thanks Jeff) and it can go back in!

Yea Ian, works perfect, and pretty quiet too.  I kept the aluminium mounting “frame” but I did toy with the idea of ditching that as well.  Its pretty compact.  With mine I tried a remote comp cams vac reservoir first to see if it was a volume thing.  That didn’t cure the issue (turns out I just wasn’t pulling enough vac) so I know have this with the tank.  No issues so far.  Nice work on the trans mate, you are a braver man than me, one was enough :)

Not a case of brave, just a case of learning, never ran plastic pistons before and figured with a stock 5.7 they’d be fine… BZZZZ now I know I won’t fall for that again!  ;-)

    Today End!

And it’s in, just have hoses tailshafts and exhaust to do then give it a flush and should be back on the road!

    Today End!

    Done!

It did kick my arse there for a bit though, filled it with fluids fired it up on the hoist and ran it through the gears… NOTHING zip zilch zero 404 gears not found..

Tried a few things still nothing, sat and thought about it a bit, there’s a little steel link that goes between the Selector arm and the Valve body, it’s a fiddly bitch to fit and somehow this time it mustn’t have been in place correctly so it dropped out and no gears!

Pumped the Oil out into a clean container then dropped the bottom off the Trans and sure enough there was the link dangling and doing nothing.. dropped the Valve body, messy horrible job under the car refitted the link put it all back together refilled it and yaay we have Gears!

Ran it through all the gears on the hoist got it to operating temp drained the oil and refilled it with fresh, quick road test and my day is done!
