The annoying thing is I used these trick 2 piece serrated ratcheting lock washers.. (only because that’s all they had that would fit the recess in the pan) …

Push comes to shove I’ll loctite em in as well..

In my aerospace days, I have seen quite a bit of research on various lock washers, tbh in the end Loctite is the go, or even wiring them in a race car application.

Turns out it isn’t the gasket…

Decided it’s time to do something about the horrible steering lock in the Lexcen, at Shepparton on a few of the parade laps I had to do 3 point turns…

When I first built the car I let a mate talk me into using stock Holden Adventra uprights as it would save fabrication time..

The downside to this is they use long arms that are angled in a way that towards full lock they go overcentre and the inside wheel flops about, to stop this I Installed positive steering stops.

There is plenty of rack and CV joint travel left so I’m making some new arms to correct this issue and address the inherent bumpsteer.

Bit of a heads up for anyone that uses 4″ cutoff discs I got some pferd brand discs today that are awesome, did a heap of cuts one of them 20mm X 15mm forged steel and still on the first disc!

The oil leak was back this morning so I pulled the cover off again cleaned it spotless then kept an eye on it, it’s the big o-ring on the pump body so yeah the engine is coming out soon as I finish the steering.. DOH..

Haven’t welded anything this thick for years so did a practice run on an attachment for the slide hammer that I use to pull the pump out of the trans..

All good got the settings sorted the proceeded to attack the uprights, I don’t think they’re going to fail and may be a touch overbuilt, didn’t want to do a Williams/ Senna..

All done still have to make some new tie rod adaptors but ran out of time as tonight is the KCC presentation night (NOT Wednesday as I’d put in my calendar)

Did you pre-heat those castings at all before welding?

Thanks Gary, got it a bit wrong they don’t work with 16″ wheels… DOH had to do a rework..

They’re Forged Steel, rare for any modern car to use castings in Suspension/Steering..

Nice mod, looks like a huge difference in lock, and congrats on the wins!!  And what’s a prototype without the odd piece or rework here and there…

Thanks Gary, yep it’s all ongoing but it’s improving each time so far!

Was pretty happy to take out the Tarmac Series considering how Injured the car was at each event!

    Almost won a barrier…

As suspected I nicked the o-ring… There was a tiny flake of crap behind it must have been just enough to hold it out of the groove… Repaired ready to go back in tomorrow..

I remember a design guru I worked for, (he literally was a hyraulics genius) once told me the hardest few seconds of an O rings life was when its being installed, so easy for that to happen, and no way of knowing.

It had been installed 3 times I guess that was rolling the dice in itself….

Was fine when it was running it didn’t leak a drop but as the Cooler is higher it would drain back to the Trans enough to hit the high tide mark where the damage was on the seal then leave a puddle overnight..

    ———————

And the Fat Bitch lives again leak free!  ;-)

Normally filling the Trans is the last thing I do this time soon as all it’s holes were full I filled it up and kept an eye on it during the day as this was when it was leaking just sitting..

Just waiting on the new front Ball Joints to arrive and I can button the front end up and I’m good to go again!

We change the oil and filter (and maybe a set of plugs), IJ removes engine/trans, rebuilds trans and refits in car…..

+1 for that, its why I have stopped on the MG, I can’t get it on the hoist until the Senators done, and I did a couple of things on the ground then decided yea-nah I will wait.  Once you have a hoist you wonder why you went so long without one.

Btw IJ, can you fir it up inside the chassis rails with both headers buttoned up fully?  I don’t reckon mine will clear but might try?
