Nothing creative you can do re the front diff ratio?

Nah not without a massive amount of work, I bought a lower first gear set for the 350 that’s between what I have now and the stock 350 so should work out perfect, the 60 first is a bit too low so never gets used off the slow corners and second isn’t high enough so the second in the 350 is again perfect.

    I never use 4th as it’s geared for 380 Kmh @ 7000 so useless… it’ll still go 265 in third..

Very nice work mate. That lathe would’ve paid for itself years ago by the looks of it.

Thanks Renno, bought it new back in 1987 so yeah paid for many many times over, I think the CNC took about 18 months to pay itself off!

I reckon a lathe is the single best machine you can have if you step up from regular garage tools. Mine is a little baby compared to IJ’s but they are just so useful. They do jobs that you can’t do any other way.

Agree 100$ awesome tool to have, I’d like something bigger but in reality I rarely “need” it..

A CNC would be a dream tool for me, but I think a lathe is my next ‘big’ purchase.

Good move, I have 2 the 1st one didn’t quite hack the weight…

    —————————

Shortened 350 shaft, Trial fit of the 350 case, I had to cut one of the ears off as it was hitting the header on the passenger side, After speaking with Gary and Trevor I decided to upspec the fasteners for the Centre Support plate.

Never been a big fan of using 5 bolts on LS/Old Trans swaps so I had an old bellhousing here that donated a Lug and attacked it with the Tig, sorted, next “issue” was this poor block has been in/out and had the Trans unbolted so often the holes were getting tired so I had to Helcoil a couple of em.. Also sorted the 350 to LS adaptor bits for the Torque converter, luckily I bought the right driveplate 8 years ago just had to find the rest of the bits ..

Good day of crossing T’s and dotting i’s!

Great idea with the extra lug on the bellhousing.

Thanks Guys, always been on my mind seeing Chev screwed the pooch with the Block, there is another Boss for bolt #6 but it doesn’t line up with anything not even on the LS bellhousing…

Looked at an aftermarket bellhousing as an option but it limits which converters you can use as it’s thick, this should do the job.

The stock bellhousing looked like it had been “filled” in that area at some point in it’s life so the top section is solid for 25mm, the old case was hollow there..

Got the Lapping plate out and surfaced the case, it had a bit of a bow in it but I guess it’s 40 odd years old so that’s to be expected, gave it a good clean then pressed a new rear bush in.

I have a bit of prep on a few of the old parts to do just measuring and pressing new bushes in then I can start assembly.

Big Square thing is a Lapping Plate, it’s smooth and flat and very heavy, you coat it with Lapping compound then do figure 8’s on what you’d like to also be flat and smooth, I bought it when I used to run the Toyota 7M Turbo engines as with MLS gaskets flat and smooth is key to making them seal.

A lot of the guys were using small round plates a bit bigger than your hand but human physiology being what it is they were lapping waves into their heads and blocks, the Big Bastard Square plate doesn’t have that problem as you use it’s own weight to do the work.

In one of my 60e’s I had issues when it was hot it’d cross leak in the Valve body and lock 2 gears at once so the car wouldn’t move…

Yeah but the only way to turn it off is apply 600hp and fry the 3>4 pack…

Made a start on the Trans today… was all good till it wasn’t..

One step forward two steps back, the input drum has a bit of runout in it and I’m not comfortable using it as is so I have the choice replace it with another stock one or use the opportunity to upgrade it to a much better drum and shaft….

When that hit the skids I cut out a gasket for the Transfer case adaptor so at least that went smoothly (can’t run the stock o-ring seal as the other set of bolts are in the same place as it would normally be)

Really nice night here so I wandered back down the Shed and assembled as much as I can for now, as a proof of concept exercise I bolted the Transfer Case up for the first time, perfect all in line and 0 binding!

So IJ, a thing I have been wondering, could you more or less (with your skills of of course) adapt that transfer case to any box, even a manual?  Is that how it works, is it simply an inline intermediate gear set to drive the front prop shaft?

Yep could use it on anything with an output shaft Gary, I toyed with the idea of a T56 or a 6060 but length was an issue and would have meant new drive shafts and exhaust mods and I’d have 3 gears I’d probably never use not to mention a 3K+ Clutch would be needed due to the traction this thing gets…

Manualised 350 just made all kinds of sense, a Mate in WA is building a car for racewars and is using a Manual, he took a different approach than I would have but it should work fine!

Trans Pump cleaned and rebuilt with new Seals and Bushes, that’s about all I can do on it till I organise the new Input Shaft and Drum later in the week, I have heaps of other things to go on with on the car so all good!
