I have to ask why “Walter”?

(thinking Walter White from Breaking Bad but can’t be that)

Nope, as in “Walter Mitty, the Splitty”  If you remember he would just close his eyes and drift off to another place.  (Susie’s idea btw not mine) ;-)

Well Susie got to name “him” as the idea is this is our car.  Actually its kinda grown on me, he sort of looks like a Walter

Yep that’s the idea Pete, I want to have a go at doing all of this myself.  Tbh I couldn’t really afford to pay someone else too, and really that’s half the fun anyway.  Its going to be a steep learning curve but slow and steady wins the race :good:

Well that’s a wrap.  Pretty bloody happy have to say, really starting to get the hang of the mig again, not sure I would pass a certification but good enough.  Like always tons more work in it than I first imagined, spent a fair time working out how to do the support against the car.  The kombi is straight until the drivers door pillar then kicks in, so made it in two sections.  It then sits at an angle to the frame, luckily I had an old mild steel junior kart axle that was the right size so made up some angled bushes.  Next week end over Easter will get some mates over and we will see how hard/easy it is to roll it over.

That’s excellent, I was the same Gary, my check book was just not even close to been big enough to pay people to do the work on the manta and even when they did I wasn’t that impressed with some of it

I seam to have this thing and I’m sure others have it to where if I’m interested in a subject I will learn it, sometimes I dont even know how I learnt it but I just do, I dont think anyone has ever tought me anything on autosparky stuff yet I seam to have a fearly decent knowledge on it, I wired every thing from my first stereo, my first relay, my first ignition system, first fuel system then all the hundreds of wires in the manta and no one has ever showed me anything on auto sparky stuff yet it’s all done and works a treat

so if you have a genuine interest and the most important part is the  enthusiasm to get out there and do it then anything is possible, might not be a elite Summernats winner job but for $$$ to $$$ value I’m on your side for doin it your self  for $30k less

Exactly, for me anyway trying/learning new stuff is part of the fun.  I’m definitely not after a show car, but I do want it to be nice.

One Dolley done and dusted.  Had a couple of friends from up the road come over and help me tilt it over.  Only issue I had was that the weight is actually quite concentrated at the bottom of the car, so I needed to re-position the casters on that side out further out to keep it balanced.  Got that done and I can comfortably move it around on my own.  So that’s that done, now I can actually start getting stuck back into the actual build.  A few pics for posterity.

^cool as, how awesome is that :good:

So yesterday got a great day in removing all the underside stuff.  So got the steering, clutch, brakes, brake lines and heater tube out.  The heater tube was wrapped in something that looked a little suspiciously like asbestos sheeting.  A good mate of mines wife is a bit of an expert in it, and said the way to do it was soak it in water, wear a mask, and carefully remove it and double bag it in plastic which is what i did.  She is going to analyze if for me just to see what it actually is.  But all of it was so much easier with it up on it side.  Yep its got rust, heaps of it, but going to be a lot of fun rebuilding it and proving the doubters wrong

    Few pics of the work

Don’t worry, I’m sure you will find some re-usable metal in there somewhere

Yep, the trick with asbestos is to stop the dust.  My house is covered in the stuff

That burner above probably burns cleaner than a VW diesel……..

Fun day today.  Gotta say I am starting to get the same buz as building the Senator.  Totally different builds but just satisfying plodding along and making progress.  Got the boys to come over and help me tilt it back right way up.  Then had the idea of using the hoist but under the dolley, works a bloody treat, gets it a great working height  Had a young lad from Gawler with a Splitty of his own come over and give me a couple of pointers.  Took him for a spin round the block in the Senator afterwards.  I am guessing by the amount of giggles he enjoyed it.  Cut off the stuffed front guards, also made start to the inside floor which I think I have sort of worked out a bit of a system for.  I know its not everyone’s idea of fun, but I think going to be cool as once its done.  You know the deal by now, a few pics for posterity :-)

Not sure this thread is generating the same air time as the Senator, must be the lack of killa wasps ha ha.  Bloody great week end, really happy actually feel like I have made heaps of progress, making those first couple of cuts was bloody nerve wracking, but once you start, you sort of get into it.  Suesy must be happy she made a nice lunch that we sat out in the shed and enjoyed chatting about different ideas for the interior layout.  Gotta say I am falling in love with this project, awesome to able to go for a squirt in the Senator as relaxation when I am sick of cutting out rust!!  Its gotta be 50kg lighter now so much rust and dirt are out of it.  Living the dream  :good:

Cheers mate, actually time for a small update I guess, so fingers crossed the resident kombi guru Andrew is making the trip to my place over the long week end.  I want him to give it the once over before its off to the blasters.  According to him there is really only one crowd in SA that he trusts to do them, given they are so flat sided, last thing I want is it wrecked by poor blasting.

We are then going to sit down and look at all the panels I need, its looking to be around $10k all up for them.  I know that sounds alot, but given that’s pretty much everything, a new nose, floors, sills, etc etc, I actually thought that wasnt too bad.  I only paid $500 for the whole bus so I am in front really.  My misses looks like hopefully picking up a part time job, and our idea is for us to use all that money for Walter.

It apparently will take quite a few weeks at the blasters as there is quite a back log, so that should give me plenty of time to start getting organized for the rebuild phase.
