Posts: 8Oct 1991 SrsI S-Pack VP HSV optionedThis is one of my vehicles being a ’91 SrsI S-Pack VP HSV optioned by first owner, I’m the 2nd owner so not many around like mine in the 8 years I’ve owned it. I’ve only ever seen one other & that’s me living in the 3 Eastern States. If you know me then you know what it’s capable of due to the mods I have applied. I don’t fry tyres as it’s just stupid IMO, I get 6.9 per 100 & run different tunes to suit various conditions. It was originally owned by a Uni professor so I doubt he was doing fully sick burnouts in it lol.
I originally got it to drive down to Victoria from the Northern Beaches in Sydney, I bumped into a mate in 2007 who said his old man had an old VP with plenty of added options (like an 80 litre fuel tank) that he hadn’t used since 2002. I dropped by checked it out & drove off happy with it, as there were log books plus a giant folder full of receipts from work done on it since he’d purchased it brand new from Suttons in Arncliffe. It had 145k on the ODO, still absolutely immaculate SS interior, no rust, very straight plus perfectly kept paint etc. There is no indication that the currently installed Buick will not keep running full-time, very tough high torque motor. Eitherway I’ve built a new fully worked performance Buick motor, which I will put in on my break. There were only 1000 of these VP variants made (stock) & at 1.3 tonnes, the power to weight ratio is the best out of VN VP VR Buicks.
Suspension :- SL Kings Springs all round with matching KYB short stop rear Shocks & front Strut inserts. SuperPro Bushes fitted right throughout the entire vehicle, New front Nolathane complete lower arms (new lower ball joints included) New OE Radius Rods (Z-Caster Bars) , KMAC Adjustable strut top bearings, Fulcrum Strut Brace,WASP Balljoint style front link Pins, 30mm KMAC front swaybar, 22mm Whiteline Adjustable rear swaybar, Pedders Adjustable Panhard Rod.
Brakes :- OE V8 All Round New Brembo OE Disc Rotors Front & Rear, Bendix Ultimate Front & Rear Pads, Overhauled V8 brake booster, New 1″ master cylinder, New OE flex lines all round. I replace the brake fuild each year & service all the calipers when required.
Wheels & Tyres :- HSV VP Senator Rims, fully skimmed to OE specs, New wheel bearings & new Bridgestone Supercats (will get better tyres soon, but they do the job pretty well for street use)Powersteering :- Brand New OE Powersteering rack (including rack ends, corrugated boots & tie rod ends) plus new “Blue” Powersteering pump with a Magnafine inline particle filter on the Powersteering return line.
Exhaust System :- Full Custom Made Stainless Steel Sports System, Mandrel Bends throughout with Twin 200 cell hi-flow cats & Hurricane Extractors.Differential :- Brand New Dana Spicer 3.9 ratio crown & pinion gear set over the 3.73’s I was initially going to get, plus of course the Brand New KAAZ-LSD-DAG3820 2-way. Sold the Fully Rebuilt Borg Warner which I’d initially Converted to 3.45 over the stock OE BW 3.08 LSD, Installed New/Reconditioned Drive shaft a few months ago.
Naturally Aspirated Air Intake :- VS S/C OTR, K&N Panel Air Filter, 3 hole airbox mod allows all 3 high pressure air zones to be utilized efficiently. I run tough corrugated tubing to both sides of the base areas of radiator which inclusive of the OTR gives maximum air flow.
Transmission :- TH700 Complete Performance rebuild with a Transtec up-spec’d kit, including an extra wide carbonite 2-4 band & “The Beast” reaction shell, plus 3-4 Z-Pac clutch plates, New Hi-Stall 2650 RPM TLC, Stage II shift kit, Corvette servo, 0.500 tv boost valve & sleeve, Transco Hi-RPM Rev Kit & new trans filter kit plus a few other accumulator related enhancements. Deep Trans alloy polished sump pan with drain plug, B&M 14,400 BTU Trans supercooler, plus a Magnafine inline particle filter on the Trans return line.
Engine :- Currently installed – Rockers are 1.9:1 HRRR, Crow pushrods, Crow Lifters, bored out Inlet Manifold & new Inlet Manifold gasket set, plus replaced all the cooling hoses, heater tap & heater hoses plus front & rear Kilkenny Castings inlet manifold bungs, New Thermostat housing & Hi Flow Thermostat, renewed water pump, New Radiator, New High Output Alternator (also the big “3” upgrade) , New idler pulley/bracket & New Gates serpentine belt, swapped out throttle body for a top quality bored out & polished 70mm unit.
I port matched & polished a spare manifold adapter elbow then contoured the bellmouth for maximum flow to the last 2 cylinders, allowing 90% more air into the manifold, replaced MAP, TPS, MAT & IAC sensors, cleaned PCV valve, replaced fuel regulator plus new fuel sender hoses, replaced DFI with a New Bosche unit (coil packs), New Bosche OE 4 hole Spray pattern injectors, High quality DriveForce Ultra-Max 8.5mm Silicone Ignition Leads along with properly gapped (I do 1.4mm) NGK Spark Plugs :- (BPR6EFS-15’s)
Renewed the brake booster vacuum hose to intake elbow, thoroughly clean air intake induction pipe & corrugated boots regularly, plus throughly flush out the cooling system then refill each year , New VP OEM Oil filter adaptor & gasket plus Ecotec pressure relief spring & valve (= 75psi Oil Pressure!), New Powerbond Harmonic Balancer & New CAS. (Oil is changed by me every 3 months using Penrite 20w – 60 Extra 10 & Liqui-moly anti-friction additive & I use K&N hi-flow oil filters).New Engine On Stand :- I’ve built a Brand New hi performance 3800 Buick S/C ready motor with bowl ported heads, E.V.L valve & guide set, Hypatec pistons, stage 2 Crow Cam, bee hive springs, Crow push rods & lifters, CS6VP Crow Timing set, New Timing chain tensioner, 1.7:1 YT rockers, cometic head gaskets, fully ported inlet manifold, 9.6 n/a up from 8.5 compression to allow 10 – 12 pound boost from the latest version of the Vortec Capa kit being built, which will include a quality intercooler, colder plugs, hi volume fuel pump, 2 Bar Map sensor plus tune & 6 x 36lb injectors for when I go FI (will Dyno tune after installing the Vortec though) . I have this new OE based heart of a V6 beast on the engine stand for me to install where I’ll break it in N/A with the Crow N/A tune on my next holidays from work soon.

Posts: 5 777Thanks. Images are pretty straight forward if you have something like photobucket. just upload to them, right click and select “copy image location” then use the insert image icon (extreme right one looks like rectangle with mountain in it) then paste the image location and away you go. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it

Posts: 15Love the new motor setup! keen to see it installed, any estimate on what power/torque its going to make?
Currently piecing together ideas for my own engine build (S1) over the next few months, much work to bring the comp up to 9.6:1? i want to try and do most of the work myself so curious on how its best to go about it.
Cheers,

I really appreciate your feedback, will have a look through my notes from the 3800 build when I can, to give you an idea – are you keeping the motor N/A or applying F.I. on top & if so, what type – Turbo or Centrifugal? Plus it’s a holistic application with the driveline, intake & exhaust to gain maximum performance as you know.
Cheers!

thanks mate appreciate it , it will be N/A for everday/street use; due to P Plate restrictions but looking at all my options in going forward as well if i want to convert it too F/I once off P’s etc.
Cheers.

Posts: 8For increased compression on your S1 3800 (without having to change the pistons), you could have the heads shaved 25 thou & whilst doing so have them bowl ported & replace the valves, springs & retainers. New lifters plus higher ratio roller rockers at only 1.7:1, plus correct length push rods to suit will be a good start without compromising clearance.

I sold the 3.45 LSD rear hub to hub & have a total rear hub to hub rebuild completed 2 weeks ago inclusive of 28 spline hardened axles, new rear wheel bearings & seals all round, plus lapped to perfection. I decided on New Dana Spicer 3.9 Ratio Crown & Pinion Gear Set over the 3.73’s I was initially going to get, plus of course the New KAAZ-LSD-DAG3820 2-Way. Bedded in the Diff with a few light figure 8’s for half an hour in big empty car parks over 4 nights (yes, you do get dizzy lol) , no hard acceleration either – this is to prevent glazing of the KAAZ clutch plates. Drained the LSD Oil initially used in the rebuild last Sunday & used “Penrite LSD Mineral Gear Oil 85W-140” (instead of the official KAAZ Oil) also added 150ml of “Penrite Limslip” Additive. Mid range pickup is very torquey indeed, this would also be attributed also to all the other work I’ve done, but for proper get up & go then 3.9’s are the best ratio IMO. Goes Great & I can’t wait to install the new engine I’ve built on my break :XD:
