Used the VL for its first tow duties on the weekend, runs awesome when started, but has devloped a cold start issue. Bit of research and it sounds like maybe a common problem with the Quadrajet, so reckon I might buy an overhaul kit and have a crack at doing it myself.

If you get stuck shoot me a pm mate can guide you through it or if you get really stuck send it down to Melbourne I can get the old man to rebuild it for you.

Forgot to update this, been a bit distracted with the Senator!!  But I can confirm I love this car!! It’s such a cool cruiser. It makes you want to wind down the window, have the elbow out, one had on the wheel and cruise.  We have a race meeting coming up in Whyalla, and lately, it’s been hotter than the surface of the sun here in S.A. So decided it was time to refresh the cooling system. So brand new copper radiator, new hoses throughout, water pump, and fan belts for insurance. Since doing that I also did the thermostat, also replaced the fan clutch which was shagged.  I also changed the plugs, leads and dizzy cap. I don’t think any of it had been touched since 1987. It just runs so nice now.

Have driven the old girl to work for the last couple of days, I want to put some miles on it to flush out any problems.  So far so good, once it has started it runs perfectly.  But only little niggle is it loses cranking speed and so is hard to start once it’s hot, I am guessing the cable to the starter and/or earth lead are bit corroded, so might pull them off and clean the terminals and check them.  It also still has the overnight cold start issue which I am pretty sure is the carby, so got an overhaul hit and at some stage, I will pull it off and have a go.

See how you go with the carb and wiring.

I fitted one of these and it helped a lot as well with warm starting

Cheers, I might try cleaning up what’s there first, then if that doesn’t solve it give that a go.

The starter motor relay kit is highly recommended as it will improve starting and also stop the ignition switch burning out which is a common fault in the early girl Commodores.

I’m not intricately familiar with the VL wiring  but if it’s similar to the earlier VB-VK it is also good to fit extra relays into the headlight harness which again is to stop the main headlight switch from burning out.

Thanks for the relay tip.  Would anyone be able to show me a basic wiring layout of how to do it?  I am guessing Supercheap would sell them?

Not going injected simply as I want to keep it original even though I know it would be better . Imo this car deserves to be left as it is. I think with a carby rebuild it should be sorted. The Quadrajet is actually a really good carby when right.

There is a pretty tough 454 that needs to be installed in a bay too.

Nice work on this Gary. Coming up a treat.

Keen for that vid your promised a while back.

Are you familiar with the standard automotive relay which you can get from any major automotive retailer?

Basically, grab a 12v, 30amp relay from your preferred supplier and mount it somewhere on the passenger side.  Take the +12v wire that is normally connected starter motor solenoid and connect it to pin 86 on the relay and connect pin 85 to a good ground (earth) and that is the signal side of the wiring sorted.  Than get some heavy gauge wire at least as big as the original wire going to the starter motor solenoid (that you just connected to pin 86 in the relay) and run it from the battery to pin 87 on the relay, fitting a fuse is certainly a good idea (fit it at the battery end of the wire) and then run another wire (same heavy gauge) from the relay (pin 30) onto the starter motor solenoid.

This is a good example, just substitute starter motor where it says fuel pump in this drawing…

No problems. Will take one of the VL. NVL quite the same as the LS but have to say the sound of a Holden V8 at idle is hard to beat…
