Posts: 227Anyone mastered heel / toe in a manual commodore?
If I put my toe on the brake I can’t swing the heel to blip the accelerator as my knee whacks the giant stock steering wheel. I could raise the steering wheel right up… haven’t tried yet… Don’t really want to get a sports steering wheel as I lose the steering wheel controls and to less extent, the airbags.
If I put my heel on the brake I can blip the accelerator, but I don’t know about going almost 200km/h at the end of Lakeside straight and using my heel to brake… there is virtually no run off at the end of the straight – will def need that airbag.
Anyone put any race pedals in their commo? top mount or bottom mount? Really wouldn’t want to lose the cruise control but i’m sure the switches could be hacked into position…. Quick google and I have not seen any race pedal boxes with cable clutch…

Posts: 105Honestly i think you’d be better off having something bolted onto the accelerator pedal that gave it additional height and moved it over towards brake pedal so you can still remove it for street. Lot of frigging around for aftermarket pedal box and don’t think you can use them with a booster which means not very street friendly.
July 3, 2015 at 3:01 pm #7886Sounds like you’re not doing something 100% right. I have no trouble in my car, it doesn’t have to be a perfect alignment (i.e. heel on one pedal toe on the other). I sort of straddle both pedals with one foot and then roll the top outside half of my right foot to blip the throttle. Like the pic below which coincidently is a commodore excuse the horrible choice in shoes lol.
The right foot stays pretty vertical mate. Try that and I think you’ll be able to do it. I can take a video in my car if need be but the video and pic below show it pretty well.

Posts: 105Fli355 what model is that photo from? I haven’t put manual pedal box in the vs yet but in the vt my brake sits much too high to that way either.

Posts: 227I get the concept of the heel / toe, it’s just the physical design of the VS pedal box isn’t really designed to allow it… I was hoping someone would say ‘do this’ and ‘do that’ or ‘throw it in the bin a buy a race pedal box’….

normal foot position over the brake
remember the brake pedal is quite small when you take the rubber off
rolling the foot to the right..
prob is that I could probably shift my foot slightly more towards the accelerator… but when i’m trying to pull up at the end of Lakeside main straight at almost 200kmh and wanting to get down to less than 110kmh, I don’t want my foot to slip off the brake pedal… there’s bugger all run off at the end of the straight on a track design in the 60’s for FJ/FX racing.

My car has the same pedal box as yours (VN) and I have absoutely no trouble doing it. You need to only use the righthand half of the brake pedal.

Posts: 39I find that same issue but in any car, when I ‘heel n toe’ you actually need to mainly use your big toe and kick your heel nearly 45 degrees and use the side of your foot to blip the throttle. I took my cars out to deserted back roads and practiced til it hurt before I got the hang of it.

Posts: 105Just watched some of that YouTube video. I was of the impression you weren’t supposed to mash the clutch pedal right to the floor the way he kept doing?

Posts: 39Depends on whether its a road or race car. I’ve found in road cars you generally do push the clutch pedal harder. Race or high performance cars (eg road registered race cars like Lambo’s etc) are set up more for performance driving.
Edit actually after rewatching the vid, he does seem to mash that pedal lol

Drove without the rubber pad for ages but it does help a lot with grip :XD:

Posts: 227I’ve been practicing a bit and starting to get it. Highway off ramps seem to be the best place to practice in day to day driving. Had the car at the shop so asked the mechanic to bend the pedal across. Well he got in the car and just bent it across… well if I knew it was going to be that easy… this was s’arvo so havn’t taken it for a cruise yet.

Posts: 227ok, so after a few weeks of practise, I think i am actually getting the hang of this heel toe thing… definitely recommend bending the accelator across… haven’t had any problems with it being too close.

Posts: 227Did a track day yesterday at Queensland Raceway and got the heel / toe working real well… just bend the pedal!
And it was easier on the track with brake pedal depressed further.
