Posts: 5 777So I have had Mobil 1 5W30 in it so far. It’s a little noisy when cold (may be the nature of the engine) great once it’s warm, but i want to drop it and change it so was thinking of swapping oils. Some people have recommended Royal Purple, any other thoughts on the best oil to use and what grade?

Posts: 208Royal Purple or Penrite. Would be my two picks of brands.
I use Penrite 10w-50, technically because mine has re-honed bores and new pistons, it’s new like yours. Instead of comparing your new motor with something with over 100thou clicks.

Posts: 5 777Cheers for that, am I right (I am not Mr Oils ) that the 5 is the cold viscosity, and the 30 is hot? So if I used what you do as 10w50 it’s a little thicker when cold and a little thicker when hot? Is that how it works?
March 2, 2015 at 7:09 pm #1259I used all oils under the sun over the last 15 yrs. I use and recommend Penrite HPR 5. My second choice is shell helix ultra

Posts: 18Maybe give ULX a call and see what they recommend in the ULX range being in SA.
Most of the really high performance race car and track car guys in SA either run Royal Purple or ULX oil.
I have run penrite HPR30 for years, I love it, mainly because I want something with high zinc for the flat tappet cam etc

Posts: 208March 2, 2015 at 8:22 pm #1337Yer was going to say HPR10 and am I right in saying changing oils can change emissions or just talking shit?
March 2, 2015 at 10:10 pm #1525I’d sick with Mobil, factory fill on some of the best cars like AMGs and GT-Rs for a reason, or royal purple.
Look for a proper group 4 synthetic, easiest way to tell what’s real and what is a gr3 ‘synthetic fortified’ is by looking at the pour point in the oil spec. Aim for -45 to -50°.
I use Delvac1 ESP in the XU6 based on advice I was given by an oil tech.

March 2, 2015 at 10:26 pm #1541HPR 10 in my fresh ls1. Fundamentally same motor as yours.
No issues at all. ULX make very good oil ESP their E85 range.
March 2, 2015 at 11:47 pm #1574The differences between good quality oils are negligible. Support Australian…

Posts: 5 777Actually was just speaking to the tuner, his personal preference is Royal Purple or Redline. Can’t say I have ever used either. Given how good he has been to date, might try what he recommends.

Posts: 264The ULX stuff is the best stuff for E85, doesn’t go milky like others do. My mate uses it in his drift car and when it gets moved in and out the workshop everyday it doesn’t go milky like others have.
I have seen redline gear oil used in a RB25 gearbox (light weight shockproof) and when pulled a part it stuck to everything inside it. It has even made them better shifting. So the redline gear is pretty good just pricey. Royal Purple is also good but never used it.

Posts: 4Dont know if its true but a Tuner I used in perth said royal purple was too slippery the rollers on the lifters would just slip over the lobe and not spin so watch that (if you have H/roller lifters).
