Posts: 5 777Excuse the french but fucking hell mate you have some serious fab skills. I dont know why you bothered with a BMW shell, you should have just fabbed your own!!
Had to laugh at this
DOH Take #2, all good, the other end was easier…
My Dad used to say there is no faster tradesman than one making a second part after messing up the first
April 19, 2019 at 11:51 am #28459Funny how the 2nd part is so quick and always much better
Thanks, I’m an enthusiastic amateur, bit of a hack at times but it get’s done and rarely fails..

Plates all drilled and tapped, enough for today I need a little thinking room on how I’ll mount it before I chop the excess off the plates.

April 20, 2019 at 2:22 pm #28463LOL Thanks!

Figured while I’m in Diff Mode I may as well sort the rear Diff mounting, got the pinion angle perfect, still lots more to do but had enough for today!

Posts: 5 777You don’t much around. Looks Great. So is that a modified Beemer rear sub frame to mount the Holden diff?
April 20, 2019 at 6:29 pm #28465Yep it is Gary, figured why reinvent the Wheel when the mounts are already there, will grab a poly kit for it, still have to add a lot of structure to it for the LCA mounts!

April 21, 2019 at 11:57 am #28467Just a quickie today, here’s “Stumpy” the rear tailshaft!
Once the Front Diff is mounted I’ll make up it’s shaft then take them down to Melbourne and get them welded and balanced.
April 23, 2019 at 7:57 am #28472Done for the Day, I made a mount for the Harrop Diff Cradle then welded up underneath where I had to cut the structure out to fit the big Diff, folded up Some 1.5mm sheet and boxed inside the car to replace what I removed.

April 24, 2019 at 4:23 pm #28485Pretty happy with the progress so far!
———————————————
Made a start on the front Diff mounts, went as far as I could then boxed in the crossmember with some 3mm plate, made the new Rack mounts, pretty sure it’s not falling off anytime soon! Also figured out why my Mig has been erratic lately, it’s not that I’m old and more crap these days..
The cable that bolts to the ground clamp has loosened and has been erroding the bolt so it was barely making contact on low settings.. retapped and a new bolt all good!
April 25, 2019 at 5:41 pm #28488Well that took longer than expected… 1 mount done, but it’s the important one, it sets the location in X Y and Z and allows me to set the pinion angle.
Took me 3 goes to get it right, first one wasn’t even close, second attempt got me within .06 of a degree, probably would have been fine but my OCD kicked in, third try was the charm, perfect!
April 26, 2019 at 4:59 pm #28490Front Diff mounted, need to pull it out and finish weld a few bits I can’t get to, the aluminium pucks get replaced with poly bushes, I don’t think it’ll fall out.
April 27, 2019 at 1:49 pm #28495Done for the day, finished the welds installed the poly bushes for a check fit and made the front driveshaft ready for welding and balancing!

Posts: 5 777Looking the goods mate, beautiful work. Now bear in mind I know next to nothing about this sort of thing. But is all the torque reaction of the front drive shafts taken out through the poly bushes and tubes? They don’t look particularly long, when you accelerate/decelerate will there be a big twisting moment on them? Just a thought, could be totally off with the fairies!
April 29, 2019 at 3:16 pm #28503Correct, but keep in mind in the stock setup all the torque is taken up by 4 M12 bolts on the Passenger side and 3 M10 bolts on the Driver side tapped into the cast sump in a much smaller PCD than my way… Don’t think it’ll be a problem as it’s only 38% of the Torque going to that end but will keep an eye on it!

And Home, trip to Bendigo to borrow a couple of pairs of Iron exhaust manifolds to test fit, bzzz as suspected close but no Cigar… But it’s given me a better idea of what I need to build.

Posts: 5 777I recall reading an old hotrod trick was to mill the face of factory headers at a slight angle to get them to hug the block more. That an option?
