Made a start on my axles… BZZZ can’t get one of the CV’s off and they have a LOT of wear in the splines so I probably wouldn’t use them anyway..

Explains some of the driveline harshness in the front, off to collect a couple of Genuine’s from my wrecker mate.

This pair were new but aftermarket and cheap at the time as I didn’t expect it to ever see high speeds.

And of course the factory axles are smaller od than the aftermarket ones so the tube I bought to sleeve them is too big id, trip to Bendigo to get the right tube that doesn’t exist so plan b, a piece of 30mm bar… Lunch at HJ’s then off to Melton to collect the axles.. nice day for a drive..

Done for the day, let me preface this with I HATE AXLES, dirty greasy pricks of things… I have enough bits to make a good pair, I spent hours stripping the joints and cleaning when I got home.

That I do, part of the price you pay to live in paradise though so it’s a fair trade!

    ———————————

That’ll do for today, was going to take a CBF’d day but decided light duties were a better idea.

Measured up properly for the axle length taking plunge into account, while I was doing this I measured up camber at full bump, in the Lexcen due to the crap geometry I was losing 2 degrees, not ideal.

In the BMW I’m seeing 1.5 degrees of camber gain, whhoo and hoo yaay, this in itself should make the car so much better to drive, I prepped up the axles ready for cutting when I’m fresh, they have NVH weights machined into them stock so I had to turn them to size before I can cut and weld them, mistakes aren’t an option at this point.

Had enough for the day, can only stand at the Lathe for so many hours before it starts to hurt..

Got my Axles ready to weld, I V the joint, then after pressing the two halves together I weld the V then machine the weld down and slide the sleeve down over the join then weld each end of the sleeve.

MUCH cheaper doing it this way than having custom axles made, even if I made my own I’d still be paying for the Cutter and it only has one use, ran this setup in the Lexcen for three years without a failure.

After thinking about this the last couple of days it came time to weld them up, done just waiting on some stainless cable ties to arrive and I can assemble them.

Well that was just too easy, cut 13mm off the rack ends and I have just about full thread engagement with room for adjustments!

Thanks, I love it when a plan comes together…  B-)

Whoo hoo, got some steering lock, even after a LOT of reworking in the Lexcen it wasn’t close to this as it was still going overcentre so I had to put lock stops in..

Ackerman angle looks about right and the big tyres clear everything.

Axles assembled and test fitted, no binding anywhere, was a bit concerned with the extra lock but all good!

Reinstalled the rest of the Cage as I need to build around it, I’ll stick with half days for awhile longer.
