Nope, it’s static, the diff is on poly mounts to isolate it noise wise..

Posts: 5 777Thank you, I haven’t ever seen an AWD set up in person. Great to be able to follow along but also understand it all too.

September 18, 2019 at 11:43 am #29805Think IRS but in the front and offset so it sits beside the engine, in the factory cars the axle goes through the sump and the diff bolts to its side.
This really limits ground clearance and dictates where the engine ends up in the chassis, not ideal as it this compromises the front end geometry..
In this one I’ve pushed the engine back behind the axle, solves a lot of the issues but produces a lot more, hence the protracted build…
Should be worth it in the end though

I’m sure IJ’s Lex build is still up on the net somewhere to see how that evolved!

Yes we all had the pleasure of watching the IJ’s Lexcen build, just amazing. I actually think pound for pound CP holds its own for some very cool and diverse Commodore based build threads
September 19, 2019 at 2:30 pm #29818Found another whoops, when I built the diff mount I measured across a front axle tripod joint then set the upright bars on that…
They’re NOT symmetrical.. doh.
Had to notch the uprights to clear then weld new bits in to box the cutouts, of course they moved again so another bout of cold setting, I swear if I roll the welder by this thing they move..
Enough for the day, I’ll get back into it tomorrow.
September 20, 2019 at 2:29 pm #29823Capped the axle tunnels then spent an hour or so adjusting things so it all fits properly..
September 21, 2019 at 6:07 pm #29825After looking at the pics yesterday I seem to have had a tolerance stackup swapping from the factory Crossmember to my Fabricated one… measured it at .9 of a degree down on the drivers side which equates to 10mm at the axle/CV end, might not have made a difference but I’d know…
Took the entire day and had to cut and remake ALL the mounts bar one but Victory is mine!

Posts: 5 777Lol, you do have a little OCD, but then that’s probably not a bad thing when you are building a 600+hp race car by yourself in your shed…
September 23, 2019 at 1:05 pm #29837LoL, yeah the OCD has its upsides at times, I slept so much better after I corrected it, things like this are too easy to let slide and you end up with subpar results..
It’s my arse that has to get in this thing so in the end it was a no brainer correcting it.

Posts: 5 777Yea agreed, and what seems to happen is at first its just one small error, and then you build something off that, which amplifies the error and so on and so on. My Grandad was anal about making things straight and square, sort of rubbed off on me, and it does pay dividends later on. Builds coming along sweet mate.
September 24, 2019 at 12:27 pm #29845Yep, very easy for the errors to compound and end up with something that has bizarre handling traits, prime example was the Lexcen..
Everything I did to it in the time I raced was just a band-aid, none of it addressed the root cause, hence the BMW build and my reluctance to repeat that mistake..
Finding it a bit hard to get back into it with the cold snap here, the couch and heater are preferable

Posts: 5 777100% get that. Not worth risking going back to how you were. Anyhow gives you more thinking time.
September 24, 2019 at 8:08 pm #29856Thinking time usually ends up costing me more….
September 25, 2019 at 12:22 pm #29868Little bit more done with the front suspension, measured up so I can make my new front axles, waiting on some female rod ends from Scotland, depending on how deep they’re drilled I might get away with stock rack ends if not it’ll only be 5>10mm..
Couple of days later the front axle is still 0.00!
