Posts: 33it’s not car parts, but I’ll be building up a scale RC Huey Helicopter soon – long term project!
It’s around 1/10th scale. Can’t seem to find pilots in the right scale, so was thinking about creating a couple of pilots with something like Daz 3D or Poser, export them in a 3D printer friendly format and find someone to print them for me.
Would you be interested in something like that ? What file formats can you handle ? 3DS ?
If you’re interested, when I model the pilots I can send you a file for a quotecheers
Darren

Posts: 5 777Just saw this. It’s a fantastic idea. I’m sure there are plenty of guys on this forum who would be very happy for you to make test pieces for them. Personally I’d be happy paying for a prototype. At the end of the day something that is 1 or 2 % from being perfect is much better than nothing at all. I’m sure we all know the feeling of knowing exactly what we want/need, but not being able to find/buy it! And it looks like the small things you have done for your Senator have turned out just fine. Good luck with this!
Cheers mate, I have been playing around in between doing the Kombi, driving the Senator and my daughters Hiace rebuild. Once they are out of the way I plan on getting stuck into it a little more

For sure mate. It seems .STL is a pretty common format for the printing. Although tbh as I have Inventor I can pretty well handle most formats. Send me a pm when you have what you want and I will have a look at it.

March 11, 2016 at 11:22 am #14975Seems like you have put more thought into this then me. I’m more the happy to test pilot the prototype.

Yea was thinking about that. For what size gauge do you think?

Posts: 33I was thinking something more along the lines of this, in the correct pose of course
Is this model too complex to print ?March 12, 2016 at 9:08 am #14995

Tbh not sure, will depend on how big it is, happy to have a try if you have an STL file of it?

Posts: 33it will be 1/10th scale so about 15-20cm high.
I haven’t got the model yet, still looking around for the right one, but that one is fairly close to what I’m looking at. The really fine details aren’t an issue.
I will send you a file once I decide with the one I’m going with, see what you think
cheers

Posts: 5 777December 30, 2016 at 12:21 am #21290I love 3D printers. The more you use them, the more you realise how you can use them.
Tonight I needed some intake manifold gasket ‘dowels’ for my injected 5 litre. Took me longer to load up my CAD software than actually design the part:
Because I was in a hurry, I did these at the lowest quality print (4 pieces took around 4 minutes):
Inserted in the heads:
Manifold down..
December 30, 2016 at 9:52 am #21291Looks good, did you make it thicker as well for strength or am I imagining it?
December 30, 2016 at 10:52 am #21293It’s probably a touch thicker but honestly next time I’d increase the ‘tube’ thickness a little more (ie. reduce i.d.) since I ran a 1.5º taper over it’s length to aid insertion into the head.
That made the very top a little thinner than I would have liked which was compounded by the fast print speed.
No biggie since they served their purpose well for me.

Posts: 5 777Nice work, what material, looks like PLA?
January 1, 2017 at 5:58 pm #21314Formfutura ABS. Prints pretty nicely

I’m moving over to their ApolloX material – an industrial-grade ASA. Has high glass temps (>100ºC) and very good UV stability.

Posts: 5 777Hi All, been pretty busy with Build Ninja, have come up with a few new designs, and also have a couple of others on the go. Starting to get quite few out and installed too which is nice. Take a look if you are after anything, and I am always up for custom stuff
